Muscle Inflammation Susceptibility: A Potential Phenotype for Guiding Precision Rehabilitation After Total Hip Arthroplasty in End-Stage Osteoarthritis.

The progression of osteoarthritis of the hip to its end stage and ultimately to total hip arthroplasty (THA) is complex; the multifactorial pathophysiology involves myriad collaborating tissues in and around the diseased joint. We have named the heightened state of periarticular muscle inflammation at the time of surgery "muscle inflammation susceptibility" (MuIS) because it is distinct from systemic inflammation. In this review article, we discuss how MuIS and heightened atrophy-associated signaling in the periarticular skeletal muscles may contribute to reduced muscle mass, impaired muscle quality (ie, through fibrosis), and a muscle microenvironment that challenges regenerative capacity and thus functional recovery from THA.

Rapid analysis of amphetamine-type substances using Agilent's QuickProbe gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer technology.

Understanding the reason for any changes to methamphetamine manufacturing trends can assist jurisdictions with predicting the potential effects of enforcement and legislative initiatives.

In New Zealand, many concerns have been raised over the presence of methamphetamine contamination in households, especially when its provenance is unknown. Previous research found that contamination levels on household surfaces were higher after the premises had been used as a clandestine laboratory. It is believed that the levels of contamination produced from smoking methamphetamine are much less than those produced through manufacture.

Establishing likelihood ratios for evaluating opposing propositions concerning the activity causing methamphetamine contamination: Smoking or manufacture?

In New Zealand, concerns have been raised over the presence of methamphetamine contamination in households, especially when the activity causing the contamination is unknown. The cause of contamination is also a contentious issue in clandestine laboratory cases concerning charges in relation to "Use of Premises" (Section 12: Misuse of Drugs Act 1975, New Zealand). Regardless of the cause, other than scientific opinion, there is currently no analytical technique that can satisfactorily address the provenance of methamphetamine residues.

Purpose: Traumatic abdominal wall hernia (TAWH) is a rare consequence of blunt abdominal trauma (BAT). We examined a series of patients suffering TAWH to evaluate its frequency, rate of associated concurrent intraabdominal injuries (CAI) and correlation with CT, management and outcomes.

Methods: A Level 1 pediatric trauma center trauma registry was queried for children less than 18 years old suffering TAWH from BAT between 2009 and 2019.

In a recent report, L-lysine salification has been shown to exert a gastroprotective effect due to its specific ability to counteract the NSAIDs-induced oxidative stress and up-regulate gastroprotective proteins. In order to derive further insights into the safety and efficacy profile of KLS, in this study we additionally compared the effect of lysine and arginine, another amino acid counterion commonly used for NSAIDs salification, in control and in ethanol challenged human gastric mucosa model.

Squamous cell carcinoma of the pinna: which histological features could be used to predict prognosis?

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) that originates in the pinna is thought to have a high risk of metastases (up to 16%) compared with under 5% for cutaneous SCC at any other site, and histological features of the primary tumour may provide evidence for further surveillance or treatment. To identify any association between histological features and the risk of metastases we made an electronic search of the histopathological records at the University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust for all patients who presented with auricular SCC from 2007-2012. Inclusion criteria included origin in the pinna, complete two-year follow up, and no history of immunosuppressive treatment.

We identified the ectoparasites and helminth fauna of yellow-legged gulls (Larus michahellis michahellis), breeding near to a solid waste landfill, and compared infection levels with those of other yellow-legged gull colonies. Moreover, we analysed correlations between parasites and sex and body condition of yellow-legged gulls, co-infections and the helminth community structure in order to propose the role of this species as reservoir of certain parasites. We also discuss the potential transmission of parasites between the yellow-legged gull and the endangered Audouin's gull, because interactions between these two species, such as kleptoparasitism and predation, occur frequently around colonies.
