Key considerations to improve the normalization, interpretation and reproducibility of morbidity data in mammalian models of viral disease.

Viral pathogenesis and therapeutic screening studies that utilize small mammalian models rely on the accurate quantification and interpretation of morbidity measurements, such as weight and body temperature, which can vary depending on the model, agent and/or experimental design used. As a result, morbidity-related data are frequently normalized within and across screening studies to aid with their interpretation. However, such data normalization can be performed in a variety of ways, leading to differences in conclusions drawn and making comparisons between studies challenging.

Sleep Quality and Disability for Custodial Grandparents Caregivers in the Southern United States.

Sleep quality amongst caregivers with disability may have been compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic. We evaluated differences in sleep quality amongst custodial grandparents from a southern state that were identified through state-based Kinship Care support groups coordinators and online. Participants ( = 102) completed the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and self-reported disability statuses.

The Consumption of Animal and Plant Foods in Areas of High Prevalence of Stroke and Colorectal Cancer.

Diets of red and processed meat have been reported as important risk factors for developing colorectal cancer. Given the racial and ethnic differences in the incidence of colorectal cancer, patterns of food consumption, and areas of residence, particularly in the South, more data is needed on the relationship between residing in a high stroke area, colorectal cancer incidence levels, and red meat and processed meat consumption. We created online surveys to ascertain meat, red meat, and healthy food consumption levels.

The Children's Data Network: Harnessing the scientific potential of linked administrative data to inform children's programs and policies.

The Children's Data Network (CDN) is a data and research collaborative focused on the linkage and analysis of administrative records. In partnership with public agencies, philanthropic funders, affiliated researchers, and community stakeholders, we seek to generate knowledge and advance evidence-rich policies that improve the health, safety, and well-being of the children of California. Given our experience negotiating access to and working with existing administrative data (and importantly, data stewards), the CDN has demonstrated its ability to perform cost-effective and rigorous record linkage, answer time-sensitive policy- and program-related questions, and build the public sector's capacity to do the same.

Management of surgical patients on opioid replacement therapy: An audit of current practice.

Patients on opioid replacement therapy hospitalised with acute pain represent a clinical challenge and have poorer perioperative outcomes. There is limited evidence relating to acute pain management of this complex cohort. The primary objectives of this retrospective audit was to establish the number of patients who are admitted on opioid replacement therapy with an acute pain condition under surgical services and evaluate the management of these patients to determine consistency of pain management practices.

Groundwater discharge impacts marine isotope budgets of Li, Mg, Ca, Sr, and Ba.

Groundwater-derived solute fluxes to the ocean have long been assumed static and subordinate to riverine fluxes, if not neglected entirely, in marine isotope budgets. Here we present concentration and isotope data for Li, Mg, Ca, Sr, and Ba in coastal groundwaters to constrain the importance of groundwater discharge in mediating the magnitude and isotopic composition of terrestrially derived solute fluxes to the ocean. Data were extrapolated globally using three independent volumetric estimates of groundwater discharge to coastal waters, from which we estimate that groundwater-derived solute fluxes represent, at a minimum, 5% of riverine fluxes for Li, Mg, Ca, Sr, and Ba.

After traumatic brain injury (TBI), multiple ongoing processes contribute to worsening and spreading of the primary injury to create a secondary injury. One major process involves disrupted fluid regulation to create vascular and cytotoxic edema in the affected area. Although understanding of factors that influence edema is incomplete, the astrocyte water channel Aquaporin 4 (AQP4) has been identified as an important mediator and therefore attractive drug target for edema prevention.

Implications of interparental conflict for adolescents' peer relationships: A longitudinal pathway through threat appraisals and social anxiety symptoms.

The goal of this study was to broaden the developmental understanding of the implications of interparental conflict (IPC) and threat appraisals of conflict for adolescents' relationships with peers. Guided by the cognitive contextual framework and evolutionary perspectives, we evaluated a developmental model in which adolescents who are exposed to IPC perceive these conflicts as threatening to their well-being or that of their family. Objective: To explore the perceptions of food access by African American women in Flint, MI.

Methods: Using womanist theory, in which African American women's experiential knowledge centered the analysis, 8 focus groups were conducted during fall/spring, 2014-2015. Seventeen mothers aged 21-50 years with children aged <18 years and 13 women aged >60 years comprised the groups.

Glucagon-like peptide-1 agonists combating clozapine-associated obesity and diabetes.

Clozapine is the most effective antipsychotic, but its use is tempered by adverse metabolic effects such as weight gain, glucose intolerance and type II diabetes. Current interventions do not facilitate compelling or sustained improvement in metabolic status. Recent studies suggest that glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) may play a key role in clozapine's metabolic effects, possibly suggesting that clozapine-associated obesity and diabetes are mediated independently through reduced GLP-1.

Method: This open-label, pilot randomised controlled trial evaluates the effect of exenatide in clozapine-treated obese adults who have schizophrenia, with or without poorly controlled diabetes.

Assessment of a healthy corner store program (FIT Store) in low-income, urban, and ethnically diverse neighborhoods in Michigan.

This study evaluated a community-based and social marketing healthy corner store program (FIT store) to improve the affordability and availability of healthy foods in low-income, urban, and ethnically diverse neighborhoods in Michigan. The Nutrition Environment Measures Survey in Stores data were analyzed for the FIT (N = 4) stores. Two cross-sectional surveys were conducted among the FIT store customers before (N = 401) and after (N = 318) the intervention.

Project FIT: rationale, design and baseline characteristics of a school- and community-based intervention to address physical activity and healthy eating among low-income elementary school children.

Background: This paper describes Project FIT, a collaboration between the public school system, local health systems, physicians, neighborhood associations, businesses, faith-based leaders, community agencies and university researchers to develop a multi-faceted approach to promote physical activity and healthy eating toward the general goal of preventing and reducing childhood obesity among children in Grand Rapids, MI, USA.

Methods/design: There are four overall components to Project FIT: school, community, social marketing, and school staff wellness - all that focus on: 1) increasing access to safe and affordable physical activity and nutrition education opportunities in the schools and surrounding neighborhoods; 2) improving the affordability and availability of nutritious food in the neighborhoods surrounding the schools; 3) improving the knowledge, self-efficacy, attitudes and behaviors regarding nutrition and physical activity among school staff, parents and students; 4) impacting the 'culture' of the schools and neighborhoods to incorporate healthful values; and 5) encouraging dialogue among all community partners to leverage existing programs and introduce new ones.

Pi-selective stationary phases: (I) Influence of the spacer chain length of phenyl type phases on the aromatic and methylene selectivity of aromatic compounds in reversed phase high performance liquid chromatography.

Phenyl type stationary phases of increasing spacer chain length (phenyl, methyl phenyl, ethyl phenyl, propyl phenyl and butyl phenyl, with 0-4 carbon atoms in the spacer chain, respectively) were synthesised and packed in house to determine the impact that the spacer chain length has on the retention process. Two trends in the aromatic selectivity, q(aromatic), were observed, depending on whether the number of carbon atoms in the spacer chain is even or odd. Linear log k' vs phi plots were obtained for each stationary phase and the S coefficient was determined from the gradient of these plots.

Teaching math skills to at-risk students using home-based peer tutoring.

Home-based peer tutoring was used to teach math skills to 4 girls with deficits in mathematics and histories of abuse or neglect. Girls living in the same home formed tutoring dyads, and each participant served as both the peer tutor and the tutee during the course of the study. At the initiation of the tutoring intervention, an expert tutor provided multiple 3-min tutoring sessions to the designated peer tutor on three or four mathematics skills.

Viscous fingering induced flow instability in multidimensional liquid chromatography.

Viscous fingering is a flow instability phenomenon that results in the destabilisation of the interface between two fluids of differing viscosities. The destabilised interface results in a complex mixing of the two fluids in a pattern that resembles fingers. The conditions that enhance this type of flow instability can be found in coupled chromatographic separation systems, even when the solvents used in each of the separation stages have seemingly similar chemical and physical properties (other than viscosity).

The effects of cumulative practice on mathematics problem solving.

This study compared three different methods of teaching five basic algebra rules to college students. All methods used the same procedures to teach the rules and included four 50-question review sessions interspersed among the training of the individual rules. The differences among methods involved the kinds of practice provided during the four review sessions.

Conservative treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome: an outcome study of adjunct exercises.

We conducted a prospective study to evaluate the effect of a new non-surgical protocol for treating carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). It incorporates the Carpal Tunnel Decompression Exercise Program (Exercise Program) into conventional non-surgical treatment. Twenty-eight patients (33 hands) met the inclusion criteria and were followed for 18 months.

Molecular mechanisms of fever and endogenous antipyresis.

This review summarizes recent studies on endogenous antipyretic mechanisms. Fever is the result of a balance between pyrogenic and cryogenic cytokines and hormones. Although there is considerable evidence that fever evolved as a host defense response, it is important that the rise in body temperature not be too high.
