Breast cancer centres - certified in accordance with the criteria of the German Cancer Association and the German Mastology Association - are established throughout Germany. Although the setting up of centres and the subsequent need for certification are associated with a marked increase in costs, initial data show positive effects on quality. Certified centres are cost-effective from the point of view of health economics - they lead to improved quality in processes and results without creating any increase in costs for the funding bodies.

Background And Aims: Cost increases in the healthcare system are leading to a need to distribute financial resources in accordance with the value of each service performed. Health-economic decision-making models can support these decisions. Due to the previous unavailability of health utilities in Germany (scored states of health as a basis for calculating quality-adjusted life-years, QALYs) for women undergoing treatment, international data are often used for such models.

Pregnancies and breastfeeding are two important protective factors concerning breast cancer risk. Breast volume and breast volume changes might be a breast phenotype that could be monitored during pregnancy and breastfeeding without ionizing radiation or expensive equipment. The aim of the present study was to document changes in breast volume during pregnancy prospectively.

Treatment decisions in oncology are based on a balance between the efficacy of therapy and its side effects. Patients with metastases and patients with a limited prognosis are a particular challenge, since communication about the disease situation and the expected therapeutic benefit is difficult not only for patients, but also for physicians. The aim of this study was therefore to compare the benefits expected of therapy by patients and physicians.

Prediction of the prognosis for metastatic breast cancer patients depends on molecular subtypes similar to those found in patients with primary breast cancer. Several studies have shown that estrogen receptor (ER) and progesterone receptor (PR) status determine the course of the disease and the prognosis. As Ki-67 helps to differentiate molecular subtypes in patients with primary breast cancer, the aim of this study was to assess the prognostic relevance of Ki-67 in the primary tumor in relation to its prognostic relevance for patients with metastatic breast cancer.

Introduction: Although care in certified breast centers is now established throughout Germany, numerous services are still not being reimbursed. This also affects other centers involved in the specialty of gynecology such as gynecological cancer centers, perinatal centers, and endometriosis centers. Although a certified center is entitled to charge additional fees, these are in most cases not reimbursed.

Several factors can influence individual perceptions of the expected benefit of recommended adjuvant treatment for breast cancer. This study investigated differences between patients and physicians with regard to the required efficacy of treatment and the factors influencing patients' and physicians' willingness to accept different therapeutic options. A total of 9,000 questionnaires were distributed to patients with breast cancer, and 6,938 questionnaires were distributed to physicians treating breast cancer patients.

Introduction: MicroRNAs (miRNAs, miRs) are a class of small, non-coding RNA molecules with relevance as regulators of gene expression thereby affecting crucial processes in cancer development. MiRNAs offer great potential as biomarkers for cancer detection due to their remarkable stability in blood and their characteristic expression in many different diseases. We investigated whether microarray-based miRNA profiling on whole blood could discriminate between early stage breast cancer patients and healthy controls.

Background: The pathological complete response (pCR) after neoadjuvant chemotherapy is a surrogate marker for a favorable prognosis in breast cancer patients. Factors capable of predicting a pCR, such as the proliferation marker Ki67, may therefore help improve our understanding of the drug response and its effect on the prognosis. This study investigated the predictive and prognostic value of Ki67 in patients with invasive breast cancer receiving neoadjuvant treatment for breast cancer.

Mammographic density (MD) has consistently been found as one of the strongest breast cancer risk factors. In our study, both qualitative and quantitative density measurements were performed in a hospital-based group of premenopausal women before and after first full-term pregnancy providing an opportunity for direct evaluation of the effects of one pregnancy on MD. Mammograms were obtained from 23 women before and after first full-term pregnancy and from 28 nulliparous controls.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how variations in 5-HT(3) receptor genes are linked to chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) in women with breast cancer.
  • Researchers analyzed DNA from 110 women and focused on eight specific single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in genes related to the 5-HT(3) receptors.
  • A significant variant, HTR3D p.G36A, was more common in those who experienced severe nausea and vomiting, suggesting that this genetic variation may help predict individual risks for CINV.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the biomarker Ki-67 in breast cancer patients to understand its relationship with other biomarkers and histological grading.
  • A total of 1232 invasive breast cancer patients were analyzed, showing that a Ki-67 index of 20% or higher is linked to poorer overall survival but not as a standalone prognostic factor when combined with tumor grade.
  • The research suggests that Ki-67 may provide more valuable prognostic information than traditional grading methods, indicating a need for further studies on its predictive utility.
