Article Synopsis
  • - Rice is a key food source in Saudi Arabia, but there's limited information about its toxic element levels, particularly regarding inorganic arsenic (i-As), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), and mercury (Hg).
  • - Analysis of both imported and locally grown Hassawi rice showed that i-As was present in concerning concentrations, with imported rice containing higher levels (73 µg/kg) compared to Hassawi rice (43 µg/kg).
  • - The estimated daily exposure for adults consuming imported rice in one city was 0.3 µg/kg-bw/day, which is below the former WHO safety threshold but exceeds the European Food Safety Authority's (EFSA) lower limit for skin cancer risk.
