Article Synopsis
  • - A 75-year-old man with a past thoraco-abdominal surgery experienced sudden severe stomach pain, leading to a CT scan that revealed small bowel loops herniating into the chest through a diaphragm defect.
  • - Although conventional CT results showed a potential normal appearance of the bowel, advanced imaging techniques like spectral imaging indicated that the herniated bowel lacked blood flow, suggesting it had died (infarcted).
  • - The quick diagnosis helped the patient undergo surgery to remove the affected bowel, resulting in a successful outcome.

Evidence indicates that astronauts experience significant bone loss in space. We previously showed that simulated microgravity (μXg) using the NASA developed rotary cell culture system (RCCS) enhanced bone resorbing osteoclast (OCL) differentiation. However, the mechanism by which μXg increases OCL formation is unclear.
