Objective: To compare cardiovascular outcomes in dogs undergoing adrenalectomy for pheochromocytoma with and without phenoxybenzamine pretreatment.

Animals: A total of 65 medical records from dogs at 5 veterinary hospitals.

Procedure: Records from January 2004 to December 2021 were evaluated for systolic, mean, and diastolic arterial pressures; numbers of hypertensive and hypotensive episodes; highest and lowest systolic arterial pressure differences; dose and duration of phenoxybenzamine; and presence of intraoperative arrhythmias.

The demand for data-driven models to inform sustainable transportation planning has become more important as countries address the complexities of urban mobility. However, data collection and curation are time-consuming and can be challenging due to data inaccessibility and inaccuracy. The Transport Starter Data Kit therefore aims to address these challenges, offering a one-stop-shop for transport modelling-related data.

The Posidonienschiefer Formation of southern Germany has yielded an array of incredible fossil vertebrates. One of the best represented clades therein is Teleosauroidea, a successful thalattosuchian crocodylomorph group that dominated the coastlines. The most abundant teleosauroid, Macrospondylus bollensis, is known from a wide range of body sizes, making it an ideal taxon for histological and ontogenetic investigations.

Whole-genome sequencing (WGS), whole-exome sequencing (WES) and array genotyping with imputation (IMP) are common strategies for assessing genetic variation and its association with medically relevant phenotypes. To date, there has been no systematic empirical assessment of the yield of these approaches when applied to hundreds of thousands of samples to enable the discovery of complex trait genetic signals. Using data for 100 complex traits from 149,195 individuals in the UK Biobank, we systematically compare the relative yield of these strategies in genetic association studies.

Background: Much policy attention focuses on increasing the supply of workers in the English NHS but there has been less attention paid to the rise in leavers. This paper seeks to explore how existing data sets can illuminate the decision-making of leavers and inform actions that could mitigate this.

Method: Secondary analysis of routinely collected data from 79 workforce projects in the UK (n = 46 339 participants) over a 4-year (2019-2023) period was undertaken.

Switzerland is an ichthyosaur country: it has a rich record of marine reptile fossils, particularly the fish-shaped ichthyosaurs, and the according research. Here, we provide an overview over the 12 or more genera and at least 13 species plus numerous fragmentary remains of ichthyosaurs from the Triassic to the Cretaceous that have been discovered in twelve cantons thus far, of which four species are based on Swiss holotypes. This wealth of ichthyosaur species can be explained by their abundance in the Middle Triassic conservation deposits (Konservat Lagerstätte) of Monte San Giorgio, as well as occasional discoveries in strata of Middle Triassic to Early Cretaceous age.

Introduction: The use of implantable antibiotic beads has become a frequent treatment modality for the management of surgical site infections in human and veterinary medicine. The objective of this study is to describe the elution kinetics of five antibiotics from a commercially available calcium sulfate antibiotic delivery kit. A secondary goal was to compare elution concentrations with minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) for commonly encountered bacteria from the University of Florida's veterinary microbiology laboratory database.

Objective: To evaluate the feasibility of an ultrasound-guided technique targeting the medial branches of the dorsal ramus of the spinal nerves (DRSN) by injecting a dye solution at the caudal aspect of the base of lumbar mammillary processes [i.e. the retromammillary (RM) space].

Article Synopsis
  • COVID-19 and influenza are respiratory illnesses caused by different viruses but share some symptoms and clinical risk factors, yet their genetic connections remain poorly understood.
  • A study involving over 18,000 influenza cases and nearly 276,000 control subjects found no common genetic risk factors between COVID-19 and influenza, revealing specific gene variants linked only to influenza.
  • The research highlights the potential for targeting cell surface receptors involved in viral entry, showing that manipulating specific genes could lead to treatments that prevent both COVID-19 and influenza infections.

Background: There is a paucity of high-quality data to guide appropriate fresh frozen plasma transfusion with current recommendations based on consensus opinion. The limitations of the product and testing modalities are poorly understood with the rare but potentially serious side effects underappreciated. Combined this has resulted in the widespread misuse of FFP.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers analyzed genetic data from nearly 1 million individuals to create a comprehensive catalogue of human protein-coding variations, shedding light on gene function and the frequency of rare coding variants.
  • The study identified over 10 million missense and 1.1 million loss-of-function variants, discovering 1,751 novel genes with rare biallelic loss-of-function variants and 3,988 genes intolerant to these variants.
  • They estimate that 3% of people carry a clinically significant genetic variant and provide public access to their data to enhance genetic interpretation and support precision medicine.

The Jurassic period was a time of major diversification for Mesozoic marine reptiles, including Ichthyosauria, Plesiosauria and thalattosuchian Crocodylomorpha. The latter originated in the Early Jurassic and thrived during the Late Jurassic. Unfortunately, the Middle Jurassic, a crucial time in their evolution, has a poor fossil record.

Background: Female physicians and patients experience gender bias in healthcare. The purpose of this research is to explore medical students' gender bias toward physicians and patients and whether their bias varies by gender.

Methods: We surveyed medical students at Memorial University between November 2020 and April 2021.

The Middle Jurassic is an important time period for the evolutionary history of marine reptiles as it represented a transitional phase for many clades. Notably, in ichthyosaurs, many early parvipelvian taxa went extinct. The Middle Jurassic saw the emergence of the derived Ophthalmosauria, ultimately becoming the dominant ichthyosaurian clade by the end of the epoch.

As personalized medicine has gained traction, drug development models in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry (BPI) have increasingly sought to address medical conditions with a genetic component, creating an opportunity for genetic counselors (GCs) to fill new roles and utilize their unique training to contribute to drug development. Despite the potential for GCs in BPI, literature around the role of GCs in this industry has been limited. Our mixed methods study aimed to assess how the roles of GCs in BPI have evolved since 2016, investigate the value of and opportunity for GCs in this industry, and further characterize their motivation and job satisfaction.

The objective of this retrospective case series is to evaluate clinical outcomes associated with the use of a bioresorbable polymeric wound matrix (MicroLyte Vet; Imbed Biosciences) for the management of soft tissue wounds of various etiologies in dogs. Medical records were reviewed between August 2019 and November 2021 for signalment, wound etiology, location, size, initial wound management, antibiotic therapy, time to initial application, number of applications, time between applications, secondary dressing used, time to wound closure, complications, and clinical outcomes. Time to initial application ranged from 1 to 61 days (median, 7.

Article Synopsis
  • The study assessed the efficacy of different automated staple sizes during a surgical procedure on cadaver dogs, focusing on their ability to create strong closures in partial gastrectomy.
  • Results showed that the smaller 3.5 mm staple cartridge provided significantly higher initial and maximal leakage pressures compared to the larger 4.8 mm cartridge.
  • Both staple sizes effectively incorporated all layers of the stomach tissue, with no significant differences noted in the shape of the staples formed, indicating that in vivo studies are needed to explore their effects on healing and recovery.

Unlabelled: Relatively complete ontogenetic series are comparatively rare in the vertebrate fossil record. This can create biases in our understanding of morphology and evolution, since immaturity can represent a source of unrecognized intraspecific variation in both skeletal anatomy and ecology. In the extinct marine reptile clade Ichthyopterygia, ontogenetic series were widely studied only in some Jurassic genera, while the ontogeny of the oldest and most basal members of the clade is very poorly understood.
