Article Synopsis
  • Fragility pelvic fractures are becoming more common due to increased life expectancy, often requiring surgery with ilio-sacral screws for stabilization.* -
  • This review discusses a novel, low-cost cement augmentation technique for ilio-sacral screws, designed for patients with poor bone quality and includes case examples from five patients treated between 2017 and 2024.* -
  • The new surgical method is straightforward and uses readily available instruments, but further research is needed to prove its efficacy compared to traditional techniques without cement augmentation.*

Periprosthetic hip fractures are a common cause for revision. To date, however, there are no reports of periprosthetic fractures (PFs) in total hip arthroplasty caused by ballistic injury (BI). There are no current recommendations on the management of this pathology in the literature.

Introduction: hip fracture represents a global health problem, with a high morbidity and mortality rate and an increasing incidence. The treatment of trochanteric fractures is reduction and osteosynthesis, and implant selection depends mainly on the stability of the fracture and lateral wall competence. Lateral wall competence has gained relevance in recent years, which led to the modification of the AO/OTA classification.

Background: Osteoporosis increases the risk of periprosthetic fracture and loosening in hip arthroplasty. Many methods have been proposed to assess bone quality in X-rays, including both qualitative such as the Dorr classification and quantitative such as the Calcar-Canal Ratio (CCR) and Cortical-Thickness index/Canal-Bone ratio (CTI/CBR). The Canal-Diaphysis ratio (CDR) has been described as a predictor for hip fragility fractures; however, its relationship with bone mineral density (BMD) has not been described.

Background: The role of oral vitamin D3 supplementation for hospitalized patients with COVID-19 remains to be determined. The study was aimed to evaluate whether vitamin D3 supplementation could prevent respiratory worsening among hospitalized patients with COVID-19.

Methods And Findings: We designed a multicentre, randomized, double-blind, sequential, placebo-controlled clinical trial.

Introduction: Hip fracture patients have been severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic; however, the sub acute effects of a concomitant SARS-CoV-2 infection and the outcomes in highly exposed developing countries are still unknown. Our objective is to describe the morbidity and mortality of elderly patients admitted for a hip fracture during the COVID-19 pandemic in Chile, with a minimum 90-day follow-up. Also, to elucidate predictors for mortality and to compare mortality results with the pre-pandemic era.

At advanced knee osteoarthritis (OA) stages subchondral trabecular bone (STB) is altered. Lower limb alignment plays a role in OA progression and modify the macroscopic loading of the medial and lateral condyles of the tibial plateau. How the properties of the STB relate to alignment and OA stage is not well defined.

Introduction: It has been postulated that the complex patterns of spinal injuries have prevented adequate agreement using thoraco-lumbar spinal injuries (TLSI) classifications; however, limb fracture classifications have also shown variable agreements. This study compared agreement using two TLSI classifications with agreement using two classifications of fractures of the trochanteric area of the proximal femur (FTAPF).

Material And Methods: Six evaluators classified the radiographs and computed tomography scans of 70 patients with acute TLSI using the Denis and the new AO Spine thoraco-lumbar injury classifications.

Background: Different techniques for gradual correction of angular deformities of lower limbs exist. Long-term behavior of the growth plate after hemiepiphysiodesis is not yet well understood. We assessed the restoration of normal physeal activity in New Zealand rabbits, after transitory hemiepiphysiodesis, using screws and nonabsorbable filament.

Background: The effect of corticosteroids on spinal fusion healing has not yet been determined. To evaluate the effect of corticosteroids on lumbar spinal fusion we designed a randomized, placebo-controlled animal study using high-dose methylprednisolone sodium succinate, which is widely used in patients with spinal cord injury who are undergoing spinal fusion.

Methods: Two groups of 18 rabbits underwent a postero-lateral fusion at L5-L6 with autologous bone graft.

Spinal fusion is usually performed on patients who receive bisphosphonates (BP); however, limited data on their action on spinal fusion are available. Previous studies in animal models have shown that chronic administrations of BP reduced spinal fusion rates, and only one study has shown that a single dose administration of zolendronic acid increased fusion rate. The objective of the present study was to evaluate if pamidronate (PA), which was previously demonstrated to reduce spinal fusion rate when administered continuously for 8 weeks, would increase the spinal fusion rate if administered in a single dose at the time of surgery in a rabbit model.
