Functional materials feature hierarchical microstructures that define their unique set of properties. The prediction and tailoring of these require a multiscale knowledge of the mechanistic interaction of microstructure and property. An important material in this respect is biodegradable magnesium alloys used for implant applications.

Transmission electron microscopy is a powerful technique for investigating the atomic structure, chemical composition and electromagnetic properties of materials with high spatial resolution and precision. However, the extraction of information about dynamic processes in the ps time regime is often not possible without extensive modification to the instrument while requiring careful control of the operation conditions to not compromise the beam quality.

In this paper we introduce a different approach based on near-field ptychography, where the focussed beam is replaced by a wide-field, structured illumination, realised through a purpose-designed etched Silicon Nitride window. We show that fields of view as large as 100 μm can be imaged using the new approach, and that quantitative electron phase images can be reconstructed from as few as nine near-field diffraction pattern measurements.

Analytical methods confirm the MoS layered structure, the presence of interfacial silicon oxide (SiO ) and the composition of the films. Electrical characteristics in combination with theoretical considerations quantify the concentration of electron states at the interface between Si and a 2.

We investigated the possibility of tuning the local switching properties of memristive crystalline SrTiO 3 thin films by inserting nanoscale defect nucleation centers. For that purpose, we employed chemically-synthesized Au nanoparticles deposited on 0.5 wt%-Nb-doped SrTiO 3 single crystal substrates as a defect formation template for the subsequent growth of SrTiO 3 .

Various degradation pathways are identified both in situ and ex situ, predominantly at the positively biased MAPbI interface. Iodide migrates into the positively biased charge transport layer and also volatilizes along with organic species, which triggers the nucleation of PbI nanoparticles and voids and hence decreases the cell performance.
