Objectives: Traditionally used to treat rotator cuff tear arthropathy (CTA), reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RTSA) is becoming increasingly utilized for the treatment of proximal humeral fractures (PHF). The purpose of this study was to use a matched cohort analysis to assess differences in 90-day complications as well as 2-year and 5-year implant survival between patients undergoing RTSA for CTA and patients undergoing RTSA for PHF.

Methods: Patients with at least a 5-year follow-up who underwent primary RTSA for either PHF or CTA were identified in a national database (PearlDiver Technologies) using current procedural terminology (CPT) and international classification of diseases (ICD) 9 and 10 codes.

Introduction: The purpose of this study was first, to assess the relationship between preoperative INR (international normalised ratio) and postoperative complication rates in patients with a hip fracture, and second, to establish a threshold for INR below which the risk of complications is comparable to those in patients with a normal INR.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program and found 35,910 cases who had undergone surgery for a hip fracture between 2012 and 2018. Cases were stratified into 4 groups based on their preoperative INR levels: <1.

Injection drug use (IDU) is a risk factor for septic arthritis (SA) of native joints. Amid the opioid crisis, IDU rates have increased. This study assessed differences in pre-operative characteristics, microbial characteristics, and postoperative outcomes of 177 cases of SA treated operatively from 2015 to 2019 at 3 US hospitals, by self-reported IDU status.

Background: As patient longevity increases following solid organ transplantation (SOT), more transplant patients are undergoing total hip arthroplasty (THA). The purpose of this study is to compare 90-day postoperative complications and 2-year surgical complications following primary THA in patients with and without a history of SOT.

Methods: Patients with a history of SOT with subsequent primary THA between 2010 and 2018 were identified in a national all-payer claims database (PearlDiver Technologies).

The orthopedic surgical specialty is strongly tied to partnerships with industry that have fostered innovation and greatly enhanced patient care. A substantial number of orthopedic surgeons currently receive some form of industry support. These relationships are highly scrutinized because they present the possibility of both personal and financial conflicts of interest (COI).

Case: A 78-year-old man was followed for an incidentally found, asymptomatic lesion in his right proximal femur that was unchanged radiographically for 11 years. He developed pain and was believed to have experienced a stress fracture through the lesion. The lesion was biopsied, showing a high-grade pleomorphic sarcoma with an underlying senescent intraosseous lipoma.

Introduction: Opioid-related compartment syndrome (ORCS) is an understudied complication related to opioid overdose. We hypothesized that ORCS would be associated with worse clinical outcomes, including higher amputation rates, need for multiple surgical procedures, and rhabdomyolysis on admission, compared with nonopioid-related compartment syndrome (NORCS).

Methods: We used Current Procedural Terminology codes for fasciotomy as a proxy marker for cases of compartment syndrome treated at 1 health system from January 1, 2016, to December 21, 2018.

Aims: To compare two methods for the rapid detection of intrapartum vaginal carriage of group B streptococci (Streptococcus agalactiae) with standard culture techniques and to establish their suitability for routine use.

Methods: Vaginal swabs from 266 patients in labour were incubated in glucose broth in an anaerobic atmosphere for four to six hours. The Wellcogen Strep B latex particle agglutination test kit was subsequently used for antigen detection.

Aim: To develop a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for the specific detection of the C protein gene in strains of group B Streptococcus.

Methods: A single primer pair derived from the nucleotide sequence of the IgA binding beta antigen of the C protein complex permitted the specific amplification of a 592 base pair DNA fragment from the C protein gene. After 35 cycles of amplification this product could be detected by agarose gel electrophoresis.

Aims: To develop a new typing system for group B streptococci based on 35S-methionine-labelled protein profiles of bacterial proteins.

Methods: 377 clinical isolates of group B streptococci were examined by incorporation of 35S-methionine into bacterial proteins under strict anaerobic conditions. After sodium dodecylsulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, autoradiography was performed.

Parts of the F gene from 16 mumps viruses derived from vaccines and clinical isolates were amplified using the polymerase chain reaction and their nucleotide sequences were determined. Over a region of 111 nucleotides, eight regions of variability were detected with a maximum of six (5.4%) changes occurring between any two virus strains.
