BRUSH Summer Research Program: Promoting Science Identity in Underrepresented Veterinary and Undergraduate Students.

While all facets of the health care workforce need to diversify, the veterinary profession lags behind in training students from underrepresented populations. The need to increase diversity among health care professionals is not limited to clinicians but extends to those generating new information through biomedical research. To address demographic disparities within the biomedical research community, we provide a summer research program for veterinary and undergraduate students from populations historically underrepresented in the biomedical workforce that is explicitly designed to foster science identity and subsequently increase participants' interest and success in pursuing biomedical research-related educational and career paths.

Development and application of soy-protein films to reduce fat intake in deep-fried foods.

A soy protein film coating was developed and evaluated to reduce fat transfer in deep-fried foods during frying. Soy protein isolate solutions (10% SPI) with 0.05% gellan gum as plasticizer cooled after being held at 80 °C for 20 min provided suitable films.

Irradiation increases superoxide dismutase in rat intestinal smooth muscle.

We investigated whether X-irradiation could induce the enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD) in intestinal muscle. Groups of rats received abdominal irradiation and the time course and dose response for SOD activity determined. Jejunal smooth muscle homogenates were analyzed for the activities of copper/zinc (CuZn) and manganese (Mn) SOD activity and for a mitochondrial marker enzyme, citrate synthase.

Chronic intestinal pseudoobstruction in young children.

We studied 8 young children (4 boys and 4 girls) with chronic intestinal pseudoobstruction. Intestinal pseudoobstruction, recurrent urinary tract infections, and dysuria occurred between the ages of a few weeks to 5 yr old. All had marked dilatation of the entire gastrointestinal tract distal to the esophagus, and megacystis.
