Unlabelled: To compare the prediction of hip fracture risk of several bone ultrasounds (QUS), 7062 Swiss women > or =70 years of age were measured with three QUSs (two of the heel, one of the phalanges). Heel QUSs were both predictive of hip fracture risk, whereas the phalanges QUS was not.
Introduction: As the number of hip fracture is expected to increase during these next decades, it is important to develop strategies to detect subjects at risk.
Objective: The impact of pregnancy on maternal bone density remains unclear. As a prerequisite to investigate the pathophysiology of gestational bone metabolism, we sought to document the changes in bone metabolism biochemistry in conjunction with those in selective trabecular/cortical osteodensitometry between early and late pregnancy.
Methods: A prospective, controlled study in a university hospital was conducted with 43 healthy women, 34 of them during uneventful pregnancy.
The primary aim of this prospective 2-year follow-up study was to investigate the effect of depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) on the maintenance of bone mass in women aged 30-45 years. The effects of estrogen or calcium substitution during the second year of follow-up was investigated in seven DMPA users with a high annual bone loss during the first year. The bone mass of 35 users of DMPA and 10 women without hormonal contraception was investigated using peripheral quantitative computed tomography.
