Objectives: Most bipolar disorder (BD) patients initially present with depressive symptoms, resulting in a delayed diagnosis of BD and poor clinical outcomes. This study aims to identify features predictive of the conversion from Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) to BD by leveraging electronic health record (EHR) data from the Clínica San Juan de Dios Manizales in Colombia.

Methods: We employed a multivariable Cox regression model to identify important predictors of conversion from MDD to BD.

Esophageal pathologies can exhibit extremely low incidence and prevalence rates. Therefore, it is essential to have multidisciplinary teams including surgeons specialized in esophageal pathology, with a high caseload, to ensure proper diagnosis and management. Background: Geographical variations in mood and psychotic disorders have been found in upper-income countries. We looked for geographic variation in these disorders in Colombia, a middle-income country. We analyzed electronic health records from the Clínica San Juan de Dios Manizales (CSJDM), which provides comprehensive mental healthcare for the one million inhabitants of Caldas.

Identification of atlastin genetic modifiers in a model of hereditary spastic paraplegia in Drosophila.

Hereditary spastic paraplegias (HSPs) are a group of neurodegenerative disorders characterized by progressive dysfunction of corticospinal motor neurons. Mutations in Atlastin1/Spg3, a small GTPase required for membrane fusion in the endoplasmic reticulum, are responsible for 10% of HSPs. Patients with the same Atlastin1/Spg3 mutation present high variability in age at onset and severity, suggesting a fundamental role of the environment and genetic background.

Hybrid Laparo-Endoscopic Resection of Submucosal Cardial Tumors Assisted by Flexible Articulated Instruments.

We report a new surgical method in 10 patients who underwent hybrid laparo-endoscopic resection (HLER) of submucosal tumors with the combination of flexible articulated laparoscopic instruments (FALI). We have assessed technical reproducibility, safety, and morbidity. Resection was completed in all cases.

Nanostructured TiO and PEDOT Electrodes with Photovoltaic Application.

In this work, nanostructured TiO and poly-3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (PEDOT) layers were electrochemically prepared over transparent electrodes. Morphological characterization evidenced the presence of nanostructures as planed with 50-nm-wide TiO rod formations followed by 30-nm-wide PEDOT wires. Different characterizations were made to the deposits, establishing their composition and optic properties of the deposits.

Use of the six core surgical indicators from the Lancet Commission on Global Surgery in Colombia: a situational analysis.

Background: Surgical, anaesthetic, and obstetric (SAO) health-care system strengthening is needed to address the emergency and essential surgical care that approximately 5 billion individuals lack globally. To our knowledge, a complete, non-modelled national situational analysis based on the Lancet Commission on Global Surgery surgical indicators has not been done. We aimed to undertake a complete situation analysis of SAO system preparedness, service delivery, and financial risk protection using the core surgical indicators proposed by the Commission in Colombia, an upper-middle-income country.

Urinary Bladder Matrix Scaffolds Promote Pericardium Repair in a Porcine Model.

Pericardium closure after cardiac surgery is recommended to prevent postoperative adhesions to the sternum. Synthetic materials have been used as substitutes, with limited results because of impaired remodeling and fibrotic tissue formation. Urinary bladder matrix (UBM) scaffolds promote constructive remodeling that more closely resemble the native tissue.

Biomechanical Features of Reinforced Esophageal Hiatus Repair in a Porcine Model.

Recurrence rates in the laparoscopic repair of the hiatal hernia range from 12% to 59%. Limitation of reinforcement has been principally the risk of adverse events caused by synthetic materials. Biologic and resorbable synthetic materials are valid alternatives.

The impact of flexible endoscopy in esophageal surgery.

Newer technologies in interventional endoscopy gave way to a substantial paradigm shift in the management of these conditions. In the case of achalasia, endoscopic myotomy is rapidly displacing Heller's myotomy as the gold standard in many centers.

Implementation and Evaluation of a Technology System to Improve Safety of the Oncohematology Medication Practices.

OBJECTIVE The objective of the study was to describe the process of implementing a technology system to improve safety and quality in all processes involved in the treatment with parenteral antineoplastic agents within an interdisciplinary team and to analyze the errors detected and avoided thanks to this system at the different stages of the process. MATERIALS AND METHODS Observational and retrospective study where the implementation of an expert technology system in all phases of the therapeutic process is described: prescription, validation, preparation and administration of drugs, in which errors found in the different phases are analysed. A descriptive analysis of the errors recorded in the various stages of the process was carried out during 3 months.

Combining electrophysiology, immunostaining and genetic manipulation at the pre and postsynaptic compartments we study the DLG contribution to the basal synaptic-function at the Drosophila larval neuromuscular junction.

Symptom Relief After Laparoscopic Paraesophageal Hernia Repair Without Mesh.

Background: Laparoscopic repair of paraesophageal hernia (LPEHR) is considered today the standard of care for this condition. While attention has been mostly focused on the incidence of postoperative radiologic recurrence of a hiatal hernia, few data are available about the effect of the operation on symptoms.

Aims: In this study, we aim to determine the effect of primary LPEHR on postoperative symptoms.

[Socio-demographic Characterization of Psychosexual Development and Crime in Men Convicted of Sexual Crimes Imprisoned in the Manizales Penitentiary Center].

Unlabelled: This article introduces the socio-demographic characteristics of psychosexual development and sexual crimes in men deprived of liberty for such crimes who are doing time in a Manizales prison (Colombia) in 2011. It also describes the differences between abusers of individuals under 12 years of age or who are 12 years old, and abusers of individuals over that age.

Methodology: This is a descriptive, retrospective study performed by simple random sampling.

Association of factor H of the alternative pathway of complement with agrin and complement receptor 3 in the Alzheimer's disease brain.

Factor H, a regulatory protein of the alternative pathway of complement (APC), is present in amyloid-beta (Abeta) plaques in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Abeta plaques also contain significant amounts of heparan sulfate proteoglycans (HSPGs), such as agrin, as well as numerous activated microglia expressing increased levels complement receptor 3 (CR3). Here, we show the colocalization of each of these molecules in the AD brain and the functional capacity for these molecules to bind to one another in vitro.
