Does a Standardized Discharge Communication Tool Improve Resident Performance and Overall Patient Satisfaction?

Introduction: The discharge conversation is a critical component of the emergency department encounter. Studies suggest that emergency medicine (EM) residency education is deficient in formally training residents on the patient discharge conversation. Our goal was to assess the proficiency of EM residents in addressing essential elements of a comprehensive discharge conversation; identify which components of the discharge conversation are omitted; introduce "DC HOME," a standardized discharge mnemonic; and determine whether its implementation improved resident performance and patient satisfaction.

Amyloid Cardiomyopathy in the Emergency Department.

Background: Cardiac amyloidosis is an underdiagnosed cause of restrictive cardiomyopathy resulting from the infiltration of the myocardium by amyloid proteins.

Case Report: We report the case of an 83-year-old woman who presented with increasing dyspnea and lower-extremity swelling. She reported a medical history of unspecified heart failure.

Glenoid hypoplasia.

Glenoid hypoplasia, also known as glenoid dysplasia and dysplasia of the scapular neck, is a failure of ossification of the posteroinferior two-thirds of the glenoid. Once thought to be a rare condition, more recent studies have shown that the incidence of glenoid hypoplasia ranges from 18% to 35%. This case report and literature review highlights the typical clinical presentation, the radiologic findings, and the management options for patients with glenoid hypoplasia.
