Lignocellulosic feedstocks are thought to have great economic and environmental significance for future biotechnological production processes. This engineered strain (RWB 217) exhibited unprecedentedly high specific growth rates and ethanol production rates under anaerobic conditions with xylose as the sole carbon source.
