In this road map for trauma in France, we focus on the main challenges for system implementation, surgical and radiology training and upon innovative training techniques. Regarding system organisation: procedures for triage, designation and certification of trauma centres are mandatory to implement trauma networks on a national scale. Data collection with registries must be created, with a core dataset defined and applied through all registries.

Unlabelled: Objectives were: i) to describe the phenotypic heterogeneity of incident amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients diagnosed in 2012 in French ALS centres; ii) to look at the associations between ALSFRS-R score and ALSFRS-R slope (ΔFS) at time of diagnosis with diagnosis delay, ALS phenotypes and Airlie House diagnosis criteria (AHDC); iii) to describe the rate of progression on ΔFS, according to diagnosis delay.

Methods: Incident ALS cases diagnosed in French ALS centres were included. The rate of progression was evaluated as follows: ΔFS = (48 - ALSFRS-R at time of diagnosis)/duration from onset to diagnosis (months).

This study focuses on the geometrical properties of turbulent flame fronts and other interfaces. Toward that end, we use an original tool based on proper orthogonal decomposition (POD), which is applied to the interface spatial coordinates. The focus is mainly on the degree of roughness of the flame front, which is quantified through the scale dependence of its coverage arclength.

Background: We compared the subjective quality of pulmonary auscultation between 2 acoustic stethoscopes (Holtex Ideal® and Littmann Cardiology III®) and an electronic stethoscope (Littmann 3200®) in the operating room.

Methods: A prospective double-blind randomized study with an evaluation during mechanical ventilation was performed in 100 patients. After each examination, the listeners using a numeric scale (0-10) rated the quality of auscultation.

Most soldiers are wounded by an explosion and haemorrhaging is the main cause of death. From the first aid provided on the field of combat to repatriation to France, every stage in the treatment of injured soldiers is meticulously organised in order to save as many lives as possible.

An experimental study on samples from a fresh human femur highlighted the viscoelastic behaviour of bone. The memory aspect of the behaviour is weak compared to the elastic aspect. A theoretical and numerical approach based on the finite element method illustrates the existing bond between the structure and the micro behaviour on the one hand, and the macro behaviour on the other.

In clinical trials, long-term use of a specific chondroitin sulphate, Chondrosult 400 (CS400) has demonstrated symptomatic efficacy in osteoarthritis comparable to that of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) with significantly fewer side-effects. CS400 could therefore reduce the use of and risks associated with NSAIDs. A cross-sectional observational study was therefore devised in 199 randomly selected pharmacies in France to verify the concomitant use of analgesic and NSAIDs medication in patients prescribed CS400.

In order to investigate the three-dimensional (3-D) mechanical properties of blood vessels, a new experimental device is described allowing in vitro static and dynamic measurements on segments of arteries with high technical performances. Static tests are applied to sheep common carotid arteries. Considering a thick-walled cylindrical model of orthotropic material under large deformations, a classical 3-D approach based on strain energy density is used to calculate the resulting mechanical behavior law in radial and circumferencial directions and stresses distribution throughout the wall thickness.

The authors present analytical and numerical approaches of the deformation of venous and arterial vessels vasa vasorum. An elastic behaviour of the vessel wall is supposed. It is shown that a normal range of intraluminar pressure induces a small deformation in the vasa vasorum in arteries.

As in most living tissues, a network of nutritional vessels, the so-called vasa vasorum, irrigates the vessel wall under physiological conditions. An alteration or obstruction of this network can induce severe lesions. Most normal arteries and veins are irrigated by a vasa vasorum network located mainly in the adventice.

The determination of a constitutive law of a fluid, the red blood can be obtained by fitting the parameters of a theorical law with experimental results. For an experience, several expressions can be agreed, each of them explain a particular property. The aim of my purpose is to describe some mathematical and numerical methods, in relation with two experiences, able to give the value of an unknown quantity by computation and to fit it with measured quantity.

Radioimmunoassay developed to measure N-terminal peptide of pro-opiomelanocortin isolated from porcine pituitaries was used to measure changes in the concentration of immunoreactive material in rat plasma. The N-terminal peptide immunoreactive material decreased in plasma after hypophysectomy of both female and male rats below the level of detectability and substantially increased after adrenalectomy as compared to normal control rats. The same changes were observed when beta-endorphin and ACTH like immunoreactive material was measured.

An adrenal cortex adenoma, surgically removed from a female patient with primary aldosteronism, was used to examine the effect of ACTH, angiotensin II, gamma 3-MSH, and the N-terminal fragment of pro-opiomelanocortin purified from porcine anterior pituitaries on aldosterone release in vitro. Primary cultures of tumor cells were incubated as a monolayer in a 96-well microtitration plate and the aldosterone release was measured in the incubation medium after 2 h of incubation in the presence of absence of different concentrations of the peptides. On a molar basis, the N-terminal portion of pro-opiomelanocortin seems to have the highest activity of all of the peptides assayed.
