Objectives: Shorter pauses in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) are associated with better health outcomes after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). Our primary objective was to examine the effect of a RapidShock defibrillator software upgrade compared with standard defibrillator software on the length of perishock pause during care for OHCA among adults. Secondary objectives were to assess the effects of RapidShock on other CPR pauses.

The authors hypothesized that conscious sedation is associated with a better functional outcome 3 months after endovascular therapy for the treatment of stroke compared with general anesthesia.

Methods: In this single-blind, randomized trial, patients received either a standardized general anesthesia or a standardized conscious sedation.

On-line spectroscopic study of brominated flame retardant extraction in supercritical CO.

Removal of brominated flame retardants (BFRs) from polymers before disposal or recycling will alleviate negative environmental effects and ensure safe usage of recycled products. Extraction of BFRs in supercritical CO is appealing but also presents challenges to industries due to limited solubility and lack of kinetic studies. For a more comprehensive evaluation of supercritical extraction potentialities, we (i) developed an on-line pressure apparatus that is compatible with both the FTIR and UV-vis spectrometers to enable kinetic and thermodynamic studies; (ii) studied kinetic extraction involving three conventional and two novel BFRs as well as three typical polymeric matrix.

Introduction: Bicycle helmet use is recognized as an effective way to prevent head injuries in cyclists. A number of countries have introduced legislation to make helmets mandatory, but many object to this type of measure for fear that it could discourage people, particularly teenagers, from cycling. In 2011, the City of Sherbrooke adopted a bylaw requiring minors to wear a bicycle helmet.

GASS Trial study protocol: a multicentre, single-blind, randomised clinical trial comparing general anaesthesia and sedation during intra-arterial treatment for stroke.

Introduction: Treatment of acute stroke has drastically changed in the last 10 years. Endovascular therapy is now the standard of care for patients with a stroke caused by a large vessel occlusion in the anterior circulation. On the molecular optical nonlinearity of halogen-bond-forming azobenzenes.

We study hyper-Rayleigh scattering and computed molecular hyperpolarizability in a series of azobenzene chromophores in chloroform and dimethylformamide as solvents. The chromophores form halogen or hydrogen bonds of varying strength with dimethylformamide molecules, differently from what is expected for chloroform. We show that hyperpolarizability is unaffected or sligthly lower with the azobenzene forming the strongest halogen bond.

Controlled, Low-Temperature Nanogap Propagation in Graphene Using Femtosecond Laser Patterning.

Graphene nanogap systems are promising research tools for molecular electronics, memories, and nanodevices. Here, a way to control the propagation of nanogaps in monolayer graphene during electroburning is demonstrated. A tightly focused femtosecond laser beam is used to induce defects in graphene according to selected patterns.

Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is a pleotropic cytokine that signals through the membrane-bound IL-6 receptor (mIL-6R) to induce anti-inflammatory ("classic-signaling") responses. This cytokine also binds to the soluble IL-6R (sIL-6R) to promote inflammation ("trans-signaling"). mIL-6R expression is restricted to hepatocytes and immune cells.

Ternary metal chalcogenide nanocrystals (NCs) offer exciting opportunities as novel materials to be explored on the nanoscale showing optoelectronic properties tunable with size and composition. CuInS (CIS) NCs are the most widely studied representatives of this family as they can be easily prepared with good size control and in high yield by reacting the metal precursors (copper iodide and indium acetate) in dodecanethiol (DDT). Despite the widespread use of this synthesis method, both the reaction mechanism and the surface state of the obtained NCs remain elusive.
