Animal Bite Injuries to the Face: A Retrospective Evaluation of 111 Cases.

The treatment of bite wounds to the face is discussed controversially in relation to surgery and antibiotics. The aim of this study is a retrospective evaluation of 111 cases of animal bite injuries to the face that presented to our unit of oral and maxillofacial surgery over a 13-year period. Children under 10 years of age were predominantly involved.

Successful implementation of online educational lectures of the German Society for Radiation Oncology (DEGRO).

Purpose: Modern digital teaching formats have become increasingly important in recent years, in part due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In January 2021, an online-based webinar series was established by the German Society for Radiation Oncology (DEGRO) and the young DEGRO (yDEGRO) working group. In the monthly 120-minute courses, selected lecturers teach curricular content as preparation for the board certification exam for radiation oncology.

Dependence of peripheral T-cell lymphoma on constitutively activated JAK3: Implication for JAK3 inhibition as a therapeutic approach.

Peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL) is a clinically heterogeneous group that represents 10%-15% of all lymphomas. Despite improved genetic and molecular understanding, treatment outcomes for PTCL have not shown significant improvement. Although Janus kinase-2 (JAK2) plays an important role in myeloproliferative neoplasms, the critical role of JAK isoforms in mediating prosurvival signaling in PTCL cells is not well defined.

Differential diagnosis between urticarial vasculitis and chronic spontaneous urticaria: An international Delphi survey.

Background: Urticarial vasculitis (UV) should be differentiated from chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU) in patients initially presenting with recurrent wheals, although criteria for differential diagnosis remain ill-defined.

Objectives: To set the goals, define criteria and unmet needs in UV diagnosis and differential diagnosis with CSU, and explore the possibility of coexistence of both diseases.

Methods: Thirteen experts experienced in UV research participated in a Delphi survey of European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology taskforce.

Introduction: Recurrence after curative resection of hepatic alveolar echinococcosis remains a clinical challenge. The current study tested if assessment of anti-recEm18 allows for postsurgical patient surveillance.

Methods: A retrospective study with patients undergoing liver resection for alveolar echinococcosis (n = 88) at the University Hospital Bern from 2002 to 2020 and at the University Hospital and Medical Center Ulm from 2011 to 2017 was performed.

Green roof gardens are important for planetary health by mitigating the effects of urbanization. Because of the nature of green roof gardens, only particular plants can be used. The allergologic impact of these plants remains ill-characterized and guidance on building allergy-friendly green roof gardens is missing.

Early complete response as a validated surrogate marker in extranodal marginal zone lymphoma systemic therapy.

Extranodal marginal zone lymphoma (EMZL) has a very indolent course, and the validation of surrogate markers could accelerate novel therapies. Although prognostic markers do exist, no surrogate markers have been validated in EMZL. We hypothesized that time to complete response within 24 months (TTCR24) and complete response (CR) at 24 months (CR24) could be valid surrogate markers of progression-free survival (PFS).

Comparison of classical and ab initio simulations of hydronium and aqueous proton transfer.

Proton transport in aqueous systems occurs by making and breaking covalent bonds, a process that classical force fields cannot reproduce. Various attempts have been made to remedy this deficiency, by valence bond theory or instantaneous proton transfers, but the ability of such methods to provide a realistic picture of this fundamental process has not been fully evaluated. Here we compare an ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulation of an excess proton in water to a simulation of a classical H3O+ in TIP3P water.

Omalizumab for Patients with Chronic Spontaneous Urticaria: A Narrative Review of Current Status.

Chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU) is a debilitating inflammatory disorder of the skin, characterized by a fluctuating natural history, a complex mechanism of action, and a significant burden on patients, including effect on quality of life, development of psychosocial disorders, and a range of comorbidities. Recent international guidelines recommend a therapeutic approach of first-line treatment with second generation H1-antihistamines and second-line treatment with the biologic omalizumab. Here, the salient aspects of CSU and current status of data for omalizumab for patients with CSU are reviewed, with a focus on mechanism of action, efficacy and real-world effectiveness (including patient outcomes, response, relapse, and remission), and safety (including consideration of the risk of anaphylaxis).

Evaluation of patient-reported outcome measures for on-demand treatment of hereditary angioedema attacks and design of KONFIDENT, a phase 3 trial of sebetralstat.

Background: Hereditary angioedema (HAE) with C1-inhibitor deficiency (HAE-C1-INH) is characterized by recurrent, debilitating episodes of swelling. Sebetralstat, an investigational oral plasma kallikrein inhibitor, demonstrated promising efficacy for on-demand treatment of HAE-C1-INH in a phase 2 trial. We describe the multipronged approach informing the design of KONFIDENT, a phase 3 randomized, placebo-controlled, three-way crossover trial evaluating the efficacy and safety of sebetralstat in patients aged ≥12 years with HAE-C1-INH.

Patient-physician interactions in hereditary angioedema-Key learnings from the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic.

Background: The coronavirus disease pandemic and its containing measures have caused concerns for patients with hereditary angioedema (HAE) and their treating physicians. Both faced challenges surrounding interaction, and communication had to adapt to facilitate appropriate management. Specifically, the pandemic resulted in reduced in-person contact in clinics.
