Long-Term Outcomes of Patients with Pre-Existing Essential Tremor After SARS-CoV-2 Infection.

Background/objectives: Although COVID-19 has been linked to worse outcomes in patients with neurological disorders, its impact on those with essential tremor (ET) remains unclear. To investigate clinical outcomes of ET patients with and without COVID-19 three and a half years post-pandemic.

Methods: 1074 ET patients were evaluated in this retrospective study in the Montefiore Health System from January 2016 to July 2023.

Oxidative Stress, Inflammation and Altered Glucose Metabolism Contribute to the Retinal Phenotype in the Choroideremia Zebrafish.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) within the retina play a key role in maintaining function and cell survival. However, excessive ROS can lead to oxidative stress, inducing dysregulation of metabolic and inflammatory pathways. The zebrafish models choroideremia (CHM), an X-linked chorioretinal dystrophy, which predominantly affects the photoreceptors, retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), and choroid.

Rescue therapy after failed thrombectomy in medium/distal vessel occlusions: A retrospective analysis of an international, multi-center registry.

Background: There are limited therapeutic options in cases of failed reperfusion (modified thrombolysis in cerebral infarction [mTICI] score < 2b) after stent-retriever and/or aspiration based endovascular treatment (EVT) for acute ischemic stroke. Despite the absence of data supporting its use, rescue therapy (balloon angioplasty and/or stent implantation) is often utilized in such cases. Studies are limited to large vessel occlusions, while the outcomes and complications after rescue therapy in medium/distal vessel occlusions (MDVOs) have not been reported.

Heterogeneity-driven phenotypic plasticity and treatment response in branched-organoid models of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma.

In patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), intratumoural and intertumoural heterogeneity increases chemoresistance and mortality rates. However, such morphological and phenotypic diversities are not typically captured by organoid models of PDAC. Here we show that branched organoids embedded in collagen gels can recapitulate the phenotypic landscape seen in murine and human PDAC, that the pronounced molecular and morphological intratumoural and intertumoural heterogeneity of organoids is governed by defined transcriptional programmes (notably, epithelial-to-mesenchymal plasticity), and that different organoid phenotypes represent distinct tumour-cell states with unique biological features in vivo.

Role and Safety of Tirofiban in Peri-Interventional Antiplatelet Management for Aneurysm Treatment.

Background: Tirofiban is administered for the treatment of aneurysms in cases of thromboembolic complications, as well as in cases of acute stenting or flow-diverter implantation required within the scope of aneurysm treatment. We aimed to investigate the efficacy and safety of tirofiban in this group of patients.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of all patients undergoing aneurysm treatment and receiving peri-interventional tirofiban administration at our institution between 2009 and 2019.

This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of outpatient intravenous (IV) antibiotic therapy for spinal neurosurgery patients with spondylodiscitis. We carried out a retrospective study involving 67 patients who were administered peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) for IV antibiotic treatment from January 2020 to December 2022.

Exploring the Experiences of Times Without Care and Encounters in Persons With Dementia in the Swiss and German Nursing Home and Domiciliary Care Settings: Protocol for an Ethnographic Multimethods Study.

Background: Persons with dementia spend a large part of the day without care and encounters, often without activity, as confirmed by numerous studies. However, no scientific analysis has examined how persons with dementia experience these periods. Such knowledge would be highly relevant for health care professionals and relatives to develop adequate strategies for dealing with times without care.

Species traits, landscape quality and floral resource overlap with honeybees determine virus transmission in plant-pollinator networks.

Emerging infectious diseases pose a threat to pollinators. Virus transmission among pollinators via flowers may be reinforced by anthropogenic land-use change and concomitant alteration of plant-pollinator interactions. Here, we examine how species' traits and roles in flower-visitation networks and landscape-scale factors drive key honeybee viruses-black queen cell virus (BQCV) and deformed wing virus-in 19 wild bee and hoverfly species, across 12 landscapes varying in pollinator-friendly (flower-rich) habitat.

A New Fibrin-Heparine Coated Self-Expanding Stent for the Rescue Treatment of Intracranial Stenosis-a Multicentric Study.

Introduction: Rescue intracranial stenting is necessary to provide sufficient recanalization after mechanical thrombectomy (MT) in patients with acute large vessel occlusions (LVO) due to an underlying intracranial atherosclerotic disease (ICAD). The CREDO heal is a novel stent that provides a potentially lower thrombogenicity due to surface modification. We present the first multicentric experience with the CREDO heal for acute rescue stenting.

Life cycle assessment of biochar for sustainable agricultural application: A review.

Biochar application is an effective strategy to address Agro-climatic challenges. However, the agro-environmental impacts of different biochar technology models are lacking of systematic summaries and reviews. Therefore, this paper comprehensively reviews recent developments derived from published literature, delving into the economic implications and environmental benefits of three distinct process namely technologies-pyrolysis, gasification, and hydrothermal carbonization.

Using a Mobile Messenger Service as a Digital Diary to Capture Patients' Experiences Along Their Interorganizational Treatment Path in Gynecologic Oncology: Lessons Learned.

A digital diary in the form of a mobile messenger service offers a novel method for data collection in cancer research. Little is known about the things to consider when using this data collection method in clinical research for patients with cancer. In this Viewpoint paper, we discuss the lessons we learned from using a qualitative digital diary method via a mobile messenger service for data collection in oncology care.

Rebound Tremor Frequency as a Potential Diagnostic Marker for Delayed Therapy Escape after Thalamic Deep Brain Stimulation for Essential Tremor-Insights from a Cross-Sectional Study.

Delayed therapy escape (DTE) is frequent after thalamic deep brain stimulation for essential tremor, leading to reduced quality of life, often with ataxic symptoms, and early recognition is challenging. Our goal was to examine whether a low-frequency rebound tremor of the left hand after switching off stimulation is useful as a diagnostic marker for DTE. In this cross-sectional study with additional retrospective analysis, we examined 31 patients with bilateral thalamic DBS ≥ 12 months for essential tremor, using quantitative assessments including video-based motion capture, Fahn-Tolosa-Marin Tremor Rating Scale (FTMTRS), and scale for the assessment and rating of ataxia (SARA).

Consequences of a stay in the intensive care unit and outpatient follow-up care for chronic critically ill patients: A retrospective data analysis.

Background: Patients with chronic critical illness (CCI) represent a particularly vulnerable patient population with significant quality-of-life consequences and a need for follow-up care. Existing research on their quality-of-life trajectory and outpatient follow-up care is limited.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to (i) describe a quality improvement project focussing on patients with CCI in the Swiss setting; (ii) explain the consequences of an intensive care unit (ICU) stay for patients with CCI; and (iii) evaluate outpatient follow-up care for patients with CCI.

Purpose: Stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT) is the predominant method for the irradiation of resection cavities after resection of brain metastases (BM). Intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT) with 50 kV x-rays is an alternative way to irradiate the resection cavity focally. We have already reported the outcome of our first 40 IORT patients treated until 2020.

Landscape structure affects temporal dynamics in the bumble bee virome: Landscape heterogeneity supports colony resilience.

Virus spillovers from managed honey bees, Apis mellifera, are thought to contribute to the decline of wild pollinators, including bumble bees. However, data on the impact of such viruses on wild pollinators remain scarce, and the influence of landscape structure on virus dynamics is poorly understood. In this study, we deployed bumble bee colonies in an agricultural landscape and studied changes in the bumble bee virome during field placement under varying habitat composition and configuration using a multiscale analytical framework.

Is surgical quality more important than radicality? Long-term outcomes of stage I-III colon cancer (SAKK 40/00).

Background: To prospectively determine the influence of variations of surgical radicality and surgical quality on long-term outcome in patients with stage I-III colon cancer.

Methods: From a prospective multicenter cohort study including 1040 patients undergoing surgery for colorectal cancer from 09/2001 to 06/2005 in nine Swiss and one German hospital, 423 patients with stage I-III colon cancer were selected and analyzed. Surgeons and pathologists filled in standardized forms prospectively assessing items of oncosurgical radicality and quality.

Coupling of biogas residue biochar and low-magnitude electric fields promotes anaerobic co-digestion of sewage sludge and food waste.

Biochar-assisted anaerobic digestion (AD) remains constrained due to the inefficient decomposition of complex organics, even with the direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) pathway. The coupling of electrochemistry with the anaerobic biological treatment could shorten lengthy retention time in co-digestion by improving electron transfer rates and inducing functional microbial acclimation. Thus, this work investigated the potential of improving the performance of AD by coupling low-magnitude electric fields with biochar derived from the anaerobically digested biogas residue.
