Unilateral pulmonary agenesis.

Pulmonary agenesis is a rare congenital anomaly. We report the case of an 8-year-old boy with left lung agenesis, without any other congenital malformations. When the patient presented symptoms, including cough, wheezing, and dyspnea, with no clinical improvement after a period of 30 days, imaging studies were conducted and the diagnosis was made.

Agreement between self-reported smoking and cotinine concentration in adolescents: a validation study in Brazil.

Purpose: To validate self-reported data on smoking in adolescents in comparison with cotinine concentration.

Methods: Two thousand two hundred nine seventh- and eighth-grade students from 32 public schools in Pelotas, Brazil. Adolescents were contacted twice--before and after an educational intervention--and samples of urine for cotinine analyses were taken.

[Prevalence of and risk factors for cigarette smoking among adolescents in South America: a systematic literature review].

Objective: To describe the prevalence of teenage smoking and the factors associated with smoking in this age group in South America.

Methods: Searches for articles concerning teenage smoking in Latin America were conducted in two bibliographic databases: MEDLINE (1966-2002) and Latin American and Caribbean Literature on the Health Sciences ("LILACS") (1982-2002). We also reviewed governmental and nongovernmental documents and Web sites.

[Prevalence and risk factors for smoking among adolescents].

Objective: Tobacco smoking is one of the main causes of preventable disease and premature disability. The study was aimed at measuring smoking prevalence and related risk factors among adolescents.

Methods: A population-based cross-sectional study was carried out in a representative sample of 1,187 adolescents aged 10 to 19 years living in the urban area of Pelotas, southern Brazil.
