Although elevated serotonin 1A receptor (5-HTR) binding potential, especially in the raphe nuclei, has been shown to be a trait associated with major depression, we did not replicate this finding in an independent sample using the partial agonist positron emission tomography tracer [C]CUMI-101. Evidence suggests that CA can induce long-lasting changes in expression of 5-HTR, and thus, a history of CA may explain the disparate findings.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFObjective: Prolonged postictal generalized electroencephalographic suppression (PGES) is a potential biomarker for sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP), which may be associated with dysfunctional autonomic responses and serotonin signaling. To better understand molecular mechanisms, PGES duration was correlated to 5HT1A and 5HT2A receptor protein expression and RNAseq from resected hippocampus and temporal cortex of temporal lobe epilepsy patients with seizures recorded in preoperative evaluation.
Methods: Analyses included 36 cases (age = 14-64 years, age at epilepsy onset = 0-51 years, epilepsy duration = 2-53 years, PGES duration = 0-93 s), with 13 cases in all hippocampal analyses.

Mechanisms underlying these brain symptoms remain understudied. Although the term is commonly used in research settings, widely accepted diagnostic criteria are lacking and vascular depression is absent from formal psychiatric manuals such as the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5 edition - a fact that limits its use in clinical settings. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques, showing a variety of cerebrovascular lesions, including extensive white matter hyperintensities, subcortical microvascular lesions, lacunes, and microinfarcts, in patients with late life depression, led to the introduction of the term "MRI-defined vascular depression".
