Mutagenesis
November 2009
Article Synopsis
- Casearia sylvestris, a plant used in Brazil for medicinal purposes like treating ulcers and tumors, was examined for its ability to protect DNA in mice.
- The study tested both the ethanolic extract of the leaves and a specific compound, caseargrewiin F, to evaluate their protective effects and potential to cause DNA damage using the micronucleus (MN) test and comet assay.
- Results showed that low concentrations of both the ethanolic extract and caseargrewiin F provided DNA protection against damage from cyclophosphamide, but higher doses resulted in increased DNA damage.
