Background/aim: Recent lung cancer treatments include an immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) pembrolizumab, platinum-based agents, plus an additional cytotoxic anticancer agent. Nutritional indices, such as the geriatric nutritional risk index (GNRI) and the prognostic nutritional index (PNI), are known to correlate with the prognosis of cancer chemotherapy. Several previous studies have investigated the relationship between PNI and treatment response in non-small cell lung cancer patients, reporting significantly increased OS and PFS in the high PNI group before treatment.

Effects of dietary oils on aging were investigated in senescence-accelerated mice. For 26 weeks, mice were fed purified diets containing 4% olive oil, safflower oil, perilla oil, or fish oil. Serum total, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and apolipoprotein A-II (ApoA-II) were significantly lower in the fish oil group than in the perilla oil group, and these were significantly lower than in the olive oil or safflower oil group.

We investigated the molecular basis of a severe factor V (FV) deficiency in a Japanese female, and identified two distinct mutations in the FV gene, a novel cytosine insertion (1943insC) and a previously reported point mutation (A5279G). We expected the patient to be a compound heterozygote for those mutations, as a 1943insC, but not an A5279G, was found in the mother and a sibling. The 1943insC will cause a frame-shift after 590Gln, resulting in amino acid substitutions with two abnormal residues followed by a stop codon in the FV A2 domain (FS592X).

Spontaneous aortic thrombosis in the neonate is a rare entity with a high mortality rate. The present patient, who was diagnosed after showing haematuria and cyanosis, underwent aortic thrombectomy with a Fogarty catheter through a left thoracotomy, but died of sepsis, disseminated intravascular coagulation and multiple organ failure. Autopsy revealed multiple residual thrombi in the main branches of the abdominal aorta and necrosis of the abdominal organs despite a patent thoracoabdominal aorta.
