Context: About half of adolescents aged 13 to 17 in United States are not fully vaccinated against human papillomavirus (HPV). As they age into young adulthood, colleges may be an excellent target population nexus for implementing interventions to improve HPV vaccination uptake.
Objectives: Our study goal was to generate knowledge about HPV vaccine offerings and awareness programs at colleges to ascertain the extent of campus-facilitated access to HPV immunization and education in 1 state.
Background: Smoking cessation is linked to improved mental health that encompasses the overall well-being and psychological functioning of an individual.
Objective: Examine relationships between smoking, mental health, and social connectedness among adults in Maryland, US in 2020.
Methodology: This cross-sectional study used data from the Maryland 2020 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System Survey of adults during the onset of COVID-19.
Ca/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase kinase 2 (CaMKK2) is a multi-functional, serine/threonine protein kinase with predominant roles in inflammation, systemic energy metabolism, and bone remodeling. We previously reported that global ablation of CaMKK2 or its systemic pharmacological inhibition led to bone mass accrual in mice by stimulating osteoblasts and inhibiting osteoclasts. However, its role in osteocytes, the most abundant bone cell type and the master regulator of bone remodeling, remains unknown. Single-celled tubules represent a complicated structure that forms during development, requiring extension of a narrow cytoplasm surrounding a lumen exerting osmotic pressure that can burst the luminal membrane. Genetic studies on the excretory canal cell of Caenorhabditis elegans have revealed many proteins that regulate the cytoskeleton, vesicular transport, and physiology of the narrow canals. Here, we show that βH-spectrin regulates the placement of intermediate filament proteins forming a terminal web around the lumen, and that the terminal web in turn retains a highly conserved protein (EXC-9/CRIP1) that regulates apical endosomal trafficking.

High altitude cerebral edema (HACE) is a rare complication of ascent to altitudes of over 2500 m (8200 ft). We are not aware of a previously published case report of HACE in a patient under the age of 18 y. Research on the self-expansion model complementarily indicates that including others into the self is linked to a greater feeling of self-efficacy. Across three correlational studies, we examined whether personal and group identity fusion is associated with stronger feelings of personal agency, and we propose that relatively stable feelings of clarity of self-concept would mediate this association.

A sample of 129 college students were randomly assigned to either a high or low stress condition, then were led to believe they had the opportunity to interact with attractive potential relationship partners and list compliments about their current partner. Results indicated that those in the high stress condition gave their partner fewer assurances and paid more attention to alternatives.

We investigated whether satisfaction in the dissolved romantic relationship could predict post-romantic friendships and friendship maintenance. We found that the more satisfied individuals were during the dissolved romance, the more likely they were to remain friends and the more likely they were to engage in friendship maintenance behaviors.

Objective: Compounds with selectivity for GABAA receptor subtypes were used to evaluate the role of GABAA receptors containing alpha1 and alpha5 subunits (alpha1GABAA and alpha5GABAA receptors, respectively) in benzodiazepine-induced increases in sucrose pellet consumption.
Materials And Methods: Adult male squirrel monkeys (N=4-6), maintained under free-feeding conditions, were administered with intramuscular injections of the nonselective benzodiazepines diazepam and alprazolam, the alpha1GABAA-preferring compounds zolpidem and zaleplon, or the alpha5GABAA-preferring agonist QH-ii-066 before daily 10-min periods when sucrose pellets were available.
Despite the inability of radiographic measurements to quantify the 3-dimensional (3D) shape and size of the hindfoot bones affected by the clubfoot pathology, radiographs continue to be used to evaluate treatment efficacy. Advancements in imaging and image analysis allow new quantitative insights to be obtained into bone shape and size. Therefore, this study sought to quantify and compare the 3D size, shape, and articulating surface morphology of the tibia, talus, calcaneus, navicular, and cuboid bones in the adolescent surgically treated unilateral clubfoot and the contralateral normal foot.

Three-dimensional translations and rotations of the talus, calcaneus, navicular, and cuboid of surgically treated clubfeet were less in magnitude and sometimes different in direction (or without motion in a specific plane) compared with the contralateral normal feet. Surgical techniques used for clubfoot treatment do not restore normal hindfoot bone motion when examined with high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging, computer reconstruction, and image analysis techniques.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFExpression of alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionate (AMPA) subunit mRNAs were assayed in the ventral mesencephalon of rats that received either a unilateral microinjection of the dopamine neurotoxin 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA; Experiment 1) or repeated treatment with amphetamine (Experiment 2). GluR2 levels were decreased 1 and 3 days after the lesion, and GluR1 and GluR3 levels also showed a transient decrease at 1 day after the lesion. Repeated amphetamine treatment did not significantly alter GluR1-4 levels measured 30 min after the third or tenth amphetamine injection, even though locomotor sensitization was obtained.
