Interposition of Free Vascularized Fascia Into the Trapezial Resection Cavity for the Surgical Treatment of Trapeziometacarpal Osteoarthritis.

Backround: Trapeziometacarpal osteoarthritis has been treated with interposition of autologous fascia into the trapezial resection cavity to prevent scaphometacarpal impingement with suboptimal results. Autologous fascia may undergo necrosis and gradual shrinkage due to avascularity. We propose vascularization of the interposed fascia using microvascular techniques as a new alternative to achieve a durable graft with sufficient soft tissue volume.

N-terminal nonsynonymous single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) are common and often affect receptor post-translational modifications. Their functional implications are, however, largely unknown. We have previously shown that the human β-adrenergic receptor (βAR) is O-glycosylated in the N-terminal extracellular domain by polypeptide GalNAc transferase-2 that co-regulates receptor proteolytic cleavage.

Background: Data on the prognostic significance of temporal variability of spatial heterogeneity of electrocardiographic repolarization in coronary artery disease (CAD) are limited.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prognostic value of temporal variability of T-wave morphology analyzed from a 5-minute resting electrocardiogram in CAD.

Methods: The standard deviation (SD) of T-wave morphology dispersion (TMD-SD) and the SD of total cosine R-to-T were analyzed on a beat-to-beat basis from a 5-minute period of the standard resting 12-lead electrocardiogram obtained before the clinical stress test in 1702 patients with angiographically verified CAD and well-preserved left ventricular function.

Day-of-the-week variation of sudden unexpected cardiac death.

Background: There has been some controversy about the day-of-the-week (septadian) variation of unexpected sudden cardiac death (SCD).

Methods: We evaluated the incidence of unexpected SCD on different days of the week in a consecutive series of 5869 SCD victims from Northern Finland [the FINGESTURE study (Finnish Genetic Study of Arrhythmic Events)]. As it is mandatory in Finland, a medico-legal autopsy was performed on all unexpected sudden death victims.

A radio-detected type Ia supernova with helium-rich circumstellar material.

Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) are thermonuclear explosions of degenerate white dwarf stars destabilized by mass accretion from a companion star, but the nature of their progenitors remains poorly understood. A way to discriminate between progenitor systems is through radio observations; a non-degenerate companion star is expected to lose material through winds or binary interaction before explosion, and the supernova ejecta crashing into this nearby circumstellar material should result in radio synchrotron emission. However, despite extensive efforts, no type Ia supernova (SN Ia) has ever been detected at radio wavelengths, which suggests a clean environment and a companion star that is itself a degenerate white dwarf star.

Nasopharyngeal detection of atypical bacteria by multiplex polymerase chain reaction panel in acutely ill children was associated with an increased risk of pneumonia.

Aim: We aimed to assess whether detection of respiratory bacteria by multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing associates with clinical outcomes in acutely ill children.

Methods: This cross-sectional study enrolled children under the age of 18 with a suspected respiratory infection treated in a paediatric emergency department of Oulu University Hospital, Finland from January 2015 through December 2015. Nasopharyngeal samples were routinely analysed for 16 respiratory viruses and later, after storage, analysed with a multiplex PCR panel for seven respiratory bacteria.

High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) is a modern, noninvasive thermal ablation method for treating uterine fibroids. There is increasing evidence that ultrasound guided HIFU (US-HIFU) has no adverse impact on ovarian reserve but little data exists on magnetic resonance guided HIFU (MR-HIFU).

Macrodomain Binding Compound MRS 2578 Inhibits Alphavirus Replication.

Alphaviruses are positive-strand RNA viruses causing febrile disease. Macrodomain-containing proteins, involved in ADP-ribose-mediated signaling, are encoded by both host cells and several virus groups, including alphaviruses. In this study, compound MRS 2578 that targets the human ADP-ribose glycohydrolase MacroD1 inhibited Semliki Forest virus production as well as viral RNA replication and replicase protein expression.

Outcomes of Revision of Interposition Implant Trapeziometacarpal Arthroplasty.

Background: Implant arthroplasties for trapeziometacarpal osteoarthritis are often associated with high complication and revision surgery rates. There are no previous studies reporting revision outcomes of failed interposition implant arthroplasty.

Methods: A patient register search was done for all implant arthroplasties performed for trapeziometacarpal osteoarthritis during a 10-year period in a single hand surgical unit.

GPR37 is an orphan G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) implicated in several neurological diseases and important physiological pathways in the brain. We previously reported that its long N-terminal ectodomain undergoes constitutive metalloprotease-mediated cleavage and shedding, which have been rarely described for class A GPCRs. Here, we demonstrate that the protease that cleaves GPR37 at Glu167↓Gln168 is a disintegrin and metalloprotease 10 (ADAM10).

Comparing the taste-modifying properties of nanocellulose and carboxymethyl cellulose.

The taste-modifying properties of nanofibrillar cellulose (NFC) and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) are compared for the first time. The samples were prepared in the form of gels, with and without added sweet and bitter taste components. As viscosity itself is known to affect taste perception, the viscosities of NFC and CMC samples were set to the same level as shear rates commonly found in the oral cavity.

The food experience is multisensory and multisensory external stimuli may affect food choice and emotions. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of a multisensory eating environment on food choice, intake and the emotional states of the subjects in a salad lunch buffet setting. A total of 30 female subjects consumed a salad lunch twice in the multisensory laboratory.

Unfavourable early outcomes of total trapeziectomy with RegJoint™ interposition: a report of 38 osteoarthritic hands in 34 patients.

This retrospective study analysed the results of total trapeziectomy with RegJoint™ interposition in 38 osteoarthritic hands in 34 patients. Patients were evaluated preoperatively, at follow-up visits, and at a mean final follow-up of 33 months (range 20-53) with plain radiographs, computed tomography, as well as with subjective and objective evaluations. Pain decreased and subjective outcomes and function improved significantly.

Midbiotics: conjugative plasmids for genetic engineering of natural gut flora.

The possibility to modify gut bacterial flora has become an important goal, and various approaches are used to achieve desirable communities. However, the genetic engineering of existing microbes in the gut, which are already compatible with the rest of the community and host immune system, has not received much attention. Here, we discuss and experimentally evaluate the possibility to use modified and mobilizable CRISPR-Cas9-endocing plasmid as a tool to induce changes in bacterial communities.

Revision of trapeziometacarpal arthroplasty: risk factors, procedures and outcomes.

Background and purpose - Revision surgery after trapeziometacarpal arthroplasty is sometimes required. Varying revision rates and outcomes have been reported in rather small patient series. Data on risk factors for revision surgery, on the final outcome of revision, and possible factors affecting the outcome of revision are also limited.

Quantitative analysis of 4β- and 4α‑hydroxycholesterol in human plasma and serum by UHPLC/ESI-HR-MS.

Cholesterol oxidation product 4β‑hydroxycholesterol (4β‑OHC) may possibly be used as an endogenous biomarker of CYP3A enzyme activity and as CYP3A4 is involved in the metabolism of approximately 50% of the drugs in clinical use, the monitoring of CYP3A activity by 4β‑OHC plasma or serum levels, may be of clinical significance. The plasma and serum concentrations of 4α‑hydroxycholesterol (4α‑OHC), an isomer of 4β‑OHC, increase during uncontrolled storage conditions and therefore serve as an indicator of proper handling of samples. A sensitive and simple high-throughput method for the simultaneous quantification of both 4α‑OHC and 4β‑OHC in human plasma and serum was developed utilizing ultrahigh performance liquid chromatography coupled with high resolution mass spectrometry (UHPLC/ESI-HR-MS).
