Objective: Intraluminally shed viable tumor cells might contribute to anastomotic recurrence in cancer of the esophagus and the cardia. The study aimed to establish a method of esophageal washout and, hence, to reduce intraluminal cancer cells before esophageal anastomosis.

Methods: Forty-eight consecutive patients with esophago-gastric resection for histologically proven cancer of the esophagus or the cardia were included in a prospective, interventional study.

Background: This is the first randomized trial to evaluate the efficacy of intraoperative cholangiography (IOC) and magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) in patients with suspected CBDS.

Methods: This unblinded, multicenter RCT was conducted at five swiss hospitals. Eligibility criteria were suspected CBDS.

Introduction: Marginal ulcer (MU) is a serious complication after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) procedures. This study reports the incidence, risk factors, and treatment outcomes of symptomatic and incidentally, at routine endoscopy diagnosed, MU.

Methods: All patients undergoing RYGB procedures between 2013 and 2018 at a single center were included.

Aim: To evaluate upper abdominal computed tomography (CT) scan as primary follow-up after laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (LRYGB).

Methods: This prospective study was approved by the Ethical Committee of the State of Zurich, and informed consent was obtained from all patients. Sixty-one patients who underwent LRYGB received upper abdominal CT on postoperative day 1, with the following scan parameters: 0.

Introduction: Spiradenocarcinomas (SCs) are rare and potentially aggressive skin adnexal tumors. Optimal treatment has not yet been established. Experiences with this carcinoma are mostly presented in case reports and few case series.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate whether metastatic colorectal cancer (Union for International Cancer Control stage IV disease) represents a risk factor for anastomotic leakage after colorectal surgery without major hepatic resection.

Methods: This retrospective cohort study was based on an existing prospective colorectal database of all consecutive colorectal resections undertaken at the authors' institution from July 2002 to July 2012 (n = 2104). All patients with colorectal resection and primary anastomosis for colorectal cancer were identified (n = 500).

Objective: To verify the impact of a health education program on elderly patients' knowledge of cardiovascular diseases.

Methods: A qualitative study with a participatory approach. The population was composed of seven elderly patients who took part in eight educational interventions on issues related to cardiovascular health.

Aim: To investigate the oncological short-term effects and acute side-effects of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-guided selective neoadjuvant radiochemotherapy (nRCT) for rectal cancer.

Patients And Methods: In a prospective multicenter cohort study of 230 patients with rectal cancer stage II or III, nRCT was applied in the following situations (n=96) only: cT4 tumors, cT3 tumors of the distal rectum or tumors leaving a circumferential resection margin (CRM) of ≤1 mm between the tumor and the mesorectal fascia (mrCRM+). Pre-therapeutical tumor stage and involvement of mesorectal fascia were assessed by MRI and were compared with the pathological findings of the rectal specimens.

Background: Little is known about the long-term survival of patients with incidental gallbladder carcinoma (IGBC). The role of radical resection for this disease is discussed controversially in the literature. We present the long-term survival and the results of re-resection versus simple cholecystectomy of the database of the Swiss Association for Laparoscopic and Thoracoscopic Surgery (SALTS) from 1994 to 2004.

The contribution of fractures to total porosity and their geometrical descriptions have been studied by Image Analysis applied to 1H Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Reservoirs of different lithology were acquired with MSME 2D quantitative and 3D sequences. An image analysis procedure, developed ad hoc, was then applied to these acquisitions and the petrophysical parameters computed.

This research was conducted in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, with a sample of battered women selected from a government shelter called the "Casa Viva Maria". We analyzed data on 110 women staying at the shelter during the previous two years (January 1996-June 1998). The profile of the women was as follows: abused women were young (mean age 29 years), all had low socioeconomic status, 12% were illiterate, 21% were black, 80% reported frequent abuse by their partners, and 18% had returned to violent homes.

The radiation damping field induced by an intense NMR line can be counterbalanced by a DANTE sequence of small flip angle pulses of opposite phase applied during the free induction decay. The transient NMR signal is acquired, one complex data point at a time, in the intervals between these DANTE pulses. As the intense signal decays, reducing the radiation damping field, the flip angles of the DANTE pulses are reduced at a matching rate.

The double-quantum-filtered carbon-carbon correlation experiment (INADEQUATE) can be accelerated significantly through a reduction in the spin-lattice relaxation times by dissolving oxygen gas in the solution. The effect is enhanced by lowering the temperature and by pressurizing the sample tube with oxygen. This offers a fourfold reduction in the relaxation times of the carbon-13 resonances in the 125-MHz spectrum of methyl salicylate.
