Background And Aims: Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) determined a paradigm shift in the treatment of patients with severe symptomatic aortic stenosis but data on very long-term durability are lacking. We sought to evaluate the clinical and hemodynamic outcomes of the CoreValve porcine pericardial self-expanding bioprosthesis at 12-year follow-up.
Methods: 882 inoperable or high-risk patients were treated with the CoreValve bioprosthesis in 8 Italian high-volume centers between 2007 and 2011.
Paracetamol is a widely used over-the-counter drug for managing fever and pain, but its quality may vary among different brands, especially in low- and middle-income countries, where counterfeit and substandard medicines are prevalent. This study evaluated the physicochemical properties of fifteen brands of 500 mg paracetamol tablets sold in various pharmacies in Freetown, Sierra Leone using identification tests, friability tests, assay, dissolution tests, and mass variation. The results showed that three brands were not registered with the Pharmacy Board of Sierra Leone, and two brands did not meet the requirement for labelling (no manufacturing date).

The occurrence of rectal involvement is generally lower than that of the involvement of other portions of the bowel. The urologic field is responsible for the majority of iatrogenic rectal injuries from pelvic surgery; general and gynecologic surgeries are prone to the occurrence as well, the latter especially in the case of rectal shaving for deep infiltrating endometriosis.

Therefore, the choice of biomaterials in hip replacement is increasingly important with the aim of obtaining a long-term satisfaction of patient and a greater survivorship of the implants. Ceramic-on-polyethylene (COP) and ceramic-on-ceramic (CoC) bearings are two common coupling used in total hip arthroplasty.

Time and patience are essential to decide how to present the data, how to conceive the tables and figures representing the main outcomes of the research, and how to read and mention the necessary references. Few basic rules may help in this difficult task.

The harvest of the tendon and the time of tendon processing on the operating table, together with the pretensioning maneuvers and the permanence out of the joint during the time of surgery, might impair tendon derived cells (TCs) viability. The aim of the study was: i) to assess the effective viability of the TCs at the end of the surgical procedure; ii) to investigate if TCs viability and the expression of tendon specific markers may be improved through exposure to prolonged pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMF) similar to that of clinical practice.

In order to eliminate inhibitors, improve cyst recovery and molecular detection of G. duodenalis, different types of water, distillates (MDs), deionized (MDz), injection (MI) or Milli-Q (MM) were used instead of formaldehyde (F) in the laboratory routine method (Ritchie).

The aim of our in vitro study was to compare the effect of two different curing units (traditional LED source and innovative laser diode lamp) on the integrity of fissure sealant material and its interface with tooth enamel.
Materials And Methods:: Sixty healthy third molars were randomly assigned to two groups.
Tendon repair is a challenging procedure in orthopaedics. The use of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMF) in tendon regeneration is still investigational. In this perspective, MSCs isolated from the human umbilical cord (UC) may represent a possible candidate for tendon tissue engineering.

The aim of this study is to investigate the chondrogenic and osteogenic potential of UC-MSCs grown onto tridimensional scaffolds, to identify a possible clinical relevance for an allogeneic use in cartilage and bone reconstructive surgery. Chondrogenic differentiation on scaffolds was confirmed at 4 weeks by the expression of sox-9 and type II collagen; low oxygen tension improved the expression of these chondrogenic markers.

Introduction: Laparoscopy is used increasingly to treat malignant and benign colorectal surgical diseases. However, this practice is still not offered to all patients. Many barriers halt the widespread use of laparoscopic colorectal surgery.

Minced cartilage fragments are a viable cell source for one stage cartilage repair. However, the joint surface is a low oxygen tension microenvironment and little evidence is present in literature regarding the behaviour of cartilage fragments in this peculiar condition. The aim of the study is i) to verify if low oxygen tension could negatively influence chondrocyte outgrowth from cartilage fragments into a Hyaluronic-Acid(HA)/fibrin scaffold and ii) to evaluate its effects on the behaviour of migrating chondrocyte, compared to normoxic condition.

The possible toxic effects of intra-articular tranexamic acid (TA) are still debated. The aim of this study was to evaluate TA effects on human cartilage fragments and synovial biopsies. Explant culture of minced articular cartilage underwent prolonged TA exposure.

Several meshes have been developed to minimize this process. In this experimental study, the ability of different combined meshes to attenuate the adhesion formation was examined.

Methods: Cartilage was taken from 5 donors undergoing total hip replacement (mean age, 65.6 years; standard deviation [SD], 3).
The umbilical cord (UC) has recently been added to the list of potential cell sources for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine purposes. Although the UC is usually discarded after delivery, UC storage in special tissue banks is becoming an increasingly common procedure. Indeed, the capacity of UC cells to be directed toward different phenotypes makes this tissue an ideal cell source for regenerative medicine in orthopedics and in other fields.

Their use is currently not restricted to the life-threatening diseases but also extended to disorders involving the structural tissues, which may not jeopardize the patients' life, but certainly influence their quality of life. In fact, a particularly popular line of research is represented by the regeneration of bone and cartilage tissues to treat various orthopaedic disorders.

We propose a culture-free approach to osteochondral repair with minced autologous cartilage fragments loaded onto a scaffold composed of a hyaluronic acid (HA)-derived membrane, platelet-rich fibrin matrix (PRFM) and fibrin glue. The aim of the study was to demonstrate in vitro the outgrowth of chondrocytes from cartilage fragments onto this scaffold and, in vivo, the formation of functional repair tissue in goat osteochondral defects. Two sections were considered: 1) in vitro: minced articular cartilage from goat stifle joints was loaded onto scaffolds, cultured for 1 or 2 months, and then evaluated histologically and immunohistochemically; 2) in vivo: 2 unilateral critically-sized trochlear osteochondral defects were created in 15 adult goats; defects were treated with cartilage fragments embedded in the scaffold (Group 1), with the scaffold alone (Group 2), or untreated (Group 3).

Delayed diagnosis of intraabdominal pathology increases the morbidity and mortality rates for these patients, whose clinical signs often are absent due to analgesic medication and sedation.
Methods: In this retrospective study performed from January 2007 to December 2009, 62 consecutive ICU patients whose blood test results showed them to be hemodynamically unstable underwent bedside diagnostic laparoscopy.
A promising approach for musculoskeletal repair and regeneration is mesenchymal-stem-cell- (MSC-)based tissue engineering. The aim of the study was to apply a simple protocol based on mincing the umbilical cord (UC), without removing any blood vessels or using any enzymatic digestion, to rapidly obtain an adequate number of multipotent UC-MSCs. We obtained, at passage 1 (P1), a mean value of 4, 2 × 10(6) cells (SD 0,4) from each UC.
