A first search for pair production of dark matter candidates through vector boson fusion in proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s]=8  TeV is performed with the CMS detector. The vector boson fusion topology enhances missing transverse momentum, providing a way to probe supersymmetry, even in the case of a compressed mass spectrum. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 18.

To determine the correlation between BRAF genotype and MLH1 promoter methylation in a screening program for Lynch syndrome (LS), a universal screening program for LS was established in two medical centers. Tumors with abnormal MLH1 staining were evaluated for both BRAF V600E genotype and MLH1 promoter methylation. Tumors positive for both were considered sporadic, and genetic testing was recommended for all others.

Purpose: Risk stratification is of utmost importance for patients with infective endocarditis (IE) who need surgery. However, for these critically ill patients, aspecific scoring systems are used to predict the risk of death after surgery. The aim of this study was both to analyze the risk factors for in-hospital death, which complicates surgery for IE and to create a mortality risk score based on the results of this analysis.

A search for heavy resonances with masses above 1 , decaying to final states containing a vector boson and a Higgs boson, is presented. The search considers hadronic decays of the vector boson, and Higgs boson decays to b quarks. The decay products are highly boosted, and each collimated pair of quarks is reconstructed as a single, massive jet.

A measurement is presented of the triple-differential dijet cross section at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 using 19.7 of data collected with the CMS detector in proton-proton collisions at the LHC. The cross section is measured as a function of the average transverse momentum, half the rapidity separation, and the boost of the two leading jets in the event.

Article Synopsis
  • - A study investigates potential excess events involving heavy-flavor quark pairs (such as b and c quarks) and significant transverse momentum imbalance from proton-proton collisions at a 13 TeV center-of-mass energy at the CERN LHC, using data collected with the CMS detector.
  • - The analysis finds no significant deviations from standard model predictions, meaning the results align with what is expected from current particle physics theories.
  • - This research contributes to dark matter understanding by interpreting its production in these heavy-flavor quark final states and combines multiple searches to create stronger exclusions than those from individual searches.

Doxycycline is an oral tetracycline antibiotic that has been associated with upper gastrointestinal (GI) mucosal injury. Recently, characteristic vascular degeneration has been reported in the stomach and duodenum in patients with doxycycline-induced injury. Fourteen patients who underwent upper GI endoscopy for nonspecific symptoms and were found to have doxycycline-induced gastric and esophageal injury are described.

A search for the resonant production of high-mass photon pairs is presented. The analysis is based on samples of proton-proton collision data collected by the CMS experiment at center-of-mass energies of 8 and 13 TeV, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 19.7 and 3.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted on proton-proton collisions at 8 TeV to search for narrow resonances decaying into dijet final states, using data from the CMS detector with a total integrated luminosity of 18.8 fb^{-1}.
  • The researchers utilized a novel data scouting technique to efficiently collect large amounts of data by streamlining the event information, which enhanced the detection of low-mass resonances at a higher rate.
  • The analysis resulted in no evidence for narrow resonances in the dijet mass distribution, and upper limits on resonance cross sections and couplings, specifically for a leptophobic resonance Z_{B}^{'}, were established, surpassing previous experimental results for masses between 500 and 800 GeV.

New sets of parameters ("tunes") for the underlying-event (UE) modelling of the pythia8, pythia6 and herwig++ Monte Carlo event generators are constructed using different parton distribution functions. Combined fits to CMS UE proton-proton ([Formula: see text]) data at [Formula: see text] and to UE proton-antiproton ([Formula: see text]) data from the CDF experiment at lower [Formula: see text], are used to study the UE models and constrain their parameters, providing thereby improved predictions for proton-proton collisions at 13[Formula: see text]. In addition, it is investigated whether the values of the parameters obtained from fits to UE observables are consistent with the values determined from fitting observables sensitive to double-parton scattering processes.

This paper reports inclusive and differential measurements of the [Formula: see text] charge asymmetry [Formula: see text] in [Formula: see text] of [Formula: see text][Formula: see text] collisions recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. Three differential measurements are performed as a function of the invariant mass, transverse momentum and longitudinal boost of the [Formula: see text] system. The [Formula: see text] pairs are selected in the single-lepton channels ( or [Formula: see text]) with at least four jets, and a likelihood fit is used to reconstruct the [Formula: see text] event kinematics.
