Purpose Of Review: Herein, we review the various recently published nephrometry scoring systems and the available data on their ability to predict clinical outcomes and their usefulness for new operative techniques.
Recent Findings: Several studies showed that the preoperative aspects and dimensions used for anatomical classification score, the RENAL system, and the centrality index are reproducible and able to predict certain clinical intraoperative and postoperative variables in patients undergoing nephron-sparing surgery. Addition of variables, such as the BMI, to the pre-existing scores might improve their predictive abilities.
Objective: To evaluate the frequency of bladder outlet obstruction (BOO) and detrusor overactivity (DO) in patients with castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) and lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS).
Patients And Methods: Our prospective urodynamics database was queried. Inclusion criteria were CRPC and an International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) ≥ 20.
Objective: To evaluate ABO blood group as a prognostic marker in patients with renal cell carcinoma (RCC).
Patients And Methods: This retrospective study included 556 consecutive patients who underwent surgery for RCC at a single institution. The associations of ABO blood group with clinical and pathological variables were assessed using Kruskal-Wallis and chi-squared tests.
Purpose: The preoperative neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio was proposed as a prognostic factor for localized clear cell renal cell carcinoma. We evaluated its role in nonclear cell renal cell carcinoma.
Materials And Methods: We queried 2 prospective kidney cancer databases.
Background: Solid organ recipients have a substantial risk of developing bladder cancer, with high-risk non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) being the most frequent diagnosis. Theoretically, adjuvant bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) therapy is contraindicated, but limited data indicate its feasibility. The objective of this study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of BCG following solid organ transplantation.

Methods: This retrospective study included 135 adult Caucasian patients with 143 benign renal tumors, which were treated surgically at a single institution. Demographics, comorbidity, histology, renal function, and management were compared by gender.
Objective: To identify clinical predictors of bladder outlet obstruction (BOO) in men with the first episode of spontaneous acute urinary retention (AUR), in order to facilitate patient selection for early de-obstructive prostate surgery.
Methods: A multichannel urodynamic investigation was performed in 156 consecutive men ≥ 50 years five days following AUR. Clinical routine parameters were evaluated for their ability to predict BOO, which was defined as a BOO-index (BOOI) >40.
Purpose: We evaluated the need of routine transurethral biopsies after an induction course of intravesical bacillus Calmette-Guérin for high grade nonmuscle invasive bladder cancer.
Materials And Methods: This retrospective study included 180 patients with high grade nonmuscle invasive bladder cancer who underwent a 6-week induction course of bacillus Calmette-Guérin. Cystoscopic findings, urinary cytology and pathological results of transurethral biopsy were evaluated.
Purpose: We studied the association of serum sex hormone levels with clinicopathological variables and biochemical recurrence in men with prostate cancer treated with radical prostatectomy.
Materials And Methods: We prospectively studied preoperative serum sex hormone-binding globulin, luteinizing hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone, and free and total testosterone in 372 patients undergoing radical prostatectomy. Biochemical recurrence was analyzed in 285 patients and defined as prostate specific antigen 0.
Objective: To prospectively test the hypothesis that end-fire transrectal ultrasound prostate biopsy probes have greater cancer detection rates than side-fire probes. Retrospective studies have suggested that such probes might have greater cancer detection rates.
Methods: The present prospective randomized multicenter trial aimed to compare the prostate cancer detection rates of the end-fire versus side-fire probe configuration during transrectal ultrasound-guided 12-core prostate biopsy.
We studied the characteristics and prognosis of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) associated with Xp11.2 translocation and transcription factor E3 (TFE3) expression and determined the need for genetic analysis in routine diagnostics. Of 848 consecutive cases, 75 showed microscopic features suggestive of Xp11.

Patients And Methods: This single-center, retrospective study included 205 men who underwent an initial 14-core TRUS-guided pBx due to PSA > 3.0 ng/ml or suspicious digital-rectal examination (DRE).
Context: For small renal masses (SRMs), partial nephrectomy (PN) represents the therapeutic standard of care. Laparoscopic cryoablation (LCA) could be regarded as an alternative to surgical excision in selected patients, if perioperative complication rates and oncologic results are comparable.
Objective: To perform a cumulative analysis of observational studies regarding oncologic outcomes and perioperative complications of both procedures.
Purpose: To directly compare perioperative, oncologic, and functional outcomes of laparoscopic renal cryoablation and open partial nephrectomy using a matched pair analysis.
Patients And Methods: A total of 41 patients who underwent laparoscopic cryoablation for an incidental, solid clinical T(1a)N(0)M(0) renal tumor were matched with 82 patients who received partial nephrectomy in cold ischemia, using optimal matching based on propensity scores, which were created on the basis of preoperative aspects and dimensions used for an anatomic classification of renal tumors (PADUA) score, preoperative glomerular filtration rate, age-adjusted Charlson comorbidity index, and sex. Median follow-up was 33.
Objective: To evaluate the impact of biphosphonate administration on subsequent (153)Samarium-ethylene-diamine-tetramethyl-phosphonate (EDTMP) uptake in bone metastases of patients with castration-resistant prostate cancer.
Patients And Methods: The bone uptake of (153)Sm-EDTMP was assessed in 40 consecutive patients with castration-resistant prostate cancer and multiple painful bone metastases and no prior bisphosphonate therapy. (153)Sm-EDTMP was repeated after 3 months in the presence of bisphosphonates (zoledronic acid every 4 weeks, first administration 1 week after (153)Sm-EDTMP administration).
Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of FloSeal(®) hemostatic matrix in preventing lymphocele development after pelvic lymphadenectomy (PLA).
Materials And Methods: This was a single-center, matched comparison of lymphadenectomies in laparoscopic and robot-assisted extraperitoneal radical prostatectomy (ERP) performed with and without FloSeal between January 2008 and October 2009. FloSeal was applied topically in the lymphadenectomy zone immediately after node resection.
Objectives: To study the putative significance of angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) in renal cell carcinoma (RCC). Recent evidence has suggested that a 287-base pair insertion (I)/deletion (D) polymorphism (rs4646994) of the angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) might be associated with cancer risk and progression.
Methods: The present case-control study accrued 383 subjects, including 210 with RCC and 173 age- and sex-matched healthy individuals without evidence or a history of cancer.

Objective: The purpose of the study was to evaluate the management and interpersonal variability of Bosniak classification and demonstrate the present diagnostic dilemmas.
Material And Methods: One-hundred and four patients with 113 complex renal cystic masses (26 Bosniak II,15 IIF,28 III and 44 IV) were included and analysed between April 1996 and May 2009.In total, 71 cystic masses were characterized by two radiologists in consensus initially as the first diagnosis (group 1), and then by a radiologist (group 2) and a urologist (group 3) independently in a blinded fashion.
Bosniak classification system is the only preoperative diagnostic tool that has proven its efficiency in the management of complex renal cystic masses. However, it is reader dependent, despite its clear definition of each category. The overall incidence of malignancy in each category did not change significantly over the past 20 years.

(Eur Urol 56:786-793, 2009) published a preoperative anatomical classification (PADUA) to assess the impact of anatomical parameters of renal tumors on complication rate of nephron-sparing surgery (NSS). The objective of this study is to provide a bi-center external validation of this classification using the technique of hilar arterial clamping during open and laparoscopic NSS and to correlate the PADUA score to the ischemia time.
