Postpartum Hemorrhage: Rescue.

Severe postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) occurs in around 1%-2% of deliveries and is a leading cause of maternal mortality and morbidity worldwide. Different treatments of PPH are proposed by the scientific society's guidelines; to date, pelvic artery embolization is an effective therapeutic strategy with the advantages of fast speed, repeatability, and the possibility of future fertility preservation. We compared the different PPH treatments, focusing especially on the role of interventional radiology reviewing pelvic vascular anatomy and emphasizing on the timing of embolization and various clinical conditions of PPH.

A giant pancreatic pseudocyst in a patient with HIV infection.

This article describes the first case of a giant pancreatic pseudocyst in a 48-year-old man with HIV infection under combination antiretroviral therapy. The patient presented with an abdominal mass involving the epigastrium, left hypochondrium, and left flank. An enhanced abdominal computed tomography (CT) scan showed a well-defined cyst of 21 cm in diameter, with a liquid content that dislocated adjacent viscera.

Emerging drugs for small cell lung cancer--an update.

Introduction: Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is a biologically complex tumor whose medical treatment has remained largely unchanged over the last 30 years. The frustration for the invariably negative results reported in the early 2000s in clinical studies investigating new agents for this disease have contributed to the little interest shown by pharmaceutical industries in funding SCLC research. However, recent advances in the molecular understanding of the oncogenic mechanisms underlying SCLC have renewed the attraction for the clinical development of novel active drugs for the treatment of this challenging disease.

Percutaneous treatment of carotid stenosis with protection system: preliminary experience.

Purpose: To assess the feasibility, safety, and efficacy of carotid artery stenting with filter device.

Materials And Methods: Between May 2001 and July 2002, a total of 96 consecutive patients (100 lesions) who presented with symptomatic >70% diameter stenosis, asymptomatic >90% diameter stenosis or post-endarterectomy as well as post-radiotherapy hemodynamically significant stenosis underwent carotid artery stenting with filter protection at our institute. The mean age of the patients was 72 (range 51-91).
