Polioviruses have caused crippling disease in humans for centuries, prior to the successful development of vaccines in the mid-1900's, which dramatically reduced disease prevalence. Continued use of these vaccines, however, threatens ultimate disease eradication and achievement of a polio-free world. Virus-like particles (VLPs) that lack a viral genome represent a safer potential vaccine, although they require particle stabilization.

The canine blood-brain barrier in health and disease: focus on brain protection.

This review examines the role of the canine blood-brain barrier (BBB) in health and disease, focusing on the impact of the multidrug resistance (MDR) transporter P-glycoprotein (P-gp) encoded by the gene. The BBB is critical in maintaining central nervous system homeostasis and brain protection against xenobiotics and environmental drugs that may be circulating in the blood stream. We revise key anatomical, histological and functional aspects of the canine BBB and examine the role of the gene mutation in specific dog breeds that exhibit reduced P-gp activity and disrupted drug brain pharmacokinetics.

The association between maternal depression and anxiety symptoms during pregnancy and child sleep patterns at age 3 years.

Background: Childhood sleep problems are common and impact physical and emotional health. Prior work suggests that prenatal maternal depression and anxiety associate with disturbed child sleep in infancy. The current study evaluated whether these same associations extend to children at 3 years of age, and if so, whether the timing of symptoms in pregnancy is relevant.

Paving the way for quality assured, decentralised point-of-care testing for infectious disease in primary care - Real world lessons from remote Australia.

Introduction: Decentralized molecular testing for infectious disease diagnosis at the point-of-care (POC) is critical to address inequities in access to timely, informed health care. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the demand, development and adoption of POC tests for infectious diseases globally. This has provided opportunities to maximize the individual benefits and public health impact of POC testing, particularly in remote and resource-limited primary care settings.

Aim: To synthesise the best available empirical evidence about the effectiveness of multimodal analgesics on pain after adult cardiac surgery.

Design: A systematic review with meta-analysis.

Methods: Indexed full-text papers or abstracts, in any language, of randomised controlled trials of adult patients undergoing cardiac surgery investigating multimodal postoperative analgesic regimen effect on mean level of patient-reported pain intensity at rest.

Process Evaluation of the Los Angeles County Rapid Diversion Program: A Pretrial Mental Health Diversion Program.

The Los Angeles County Rapid Diversion Program (RDP) is a pretrial mental health diversion program operating in seven courthouses in Los Angeles County, California. Established in 2019 as a faster approach to pretrial mental health diversion compared with the traditional approach, RDP allows for the diversion of individuals who have a mental health diagnosis or substance use disorder and certain qualifying misdemeanor or felony charges. Individuals who complete the program have their case dismissed.

Climate Change and the Emergence of No-Analog Forest Assemblages in North America.

Future climate change is expected to result in tree species shifting their geographic distributions in ways that could reorganize species into assemblages with no contemporary analog. These projected no-analog forests raise concern as their ecological function could similarly shift, which may challenge established conservation and management efforts. Here, we implement a community-level modelling approach to identify the key climatic and topographic drivers of forest composition in North America, and then use these models to predict the distribution of "disappearing" and "novel" forest assemblages in future climate.

Personhood, Dementia, and Bioethics.

Jennifer Blumenthal-Barby (2024) has called for bioethics to end talk about personhood, asserting that such talk has the tendency to confuse and offend. It will be argued that this has only limited application for (largely) private settings. However, in other settings, theorizing about personhood leaves a gap in which there is the risk that the offending concept will get uptake elsewhere, and so the problem Blumenthal-Barby nominates may not be completely avoided.

Identification of a DNA methylation signature in whole blood of newborn guinea pigs and human neonates following antenatal betamethasone exposure.

Antenatal corticosteroids (ACS) are administered where there is risk of preterm birth to promote fetal lung development and improve perinatal survival. However, treatment may be associated with increased risk of developing neurobehavioural disorders. We have recently identified that ACS results in significant changes to DNA methylation patterns in the newborn and juvenile prefrontal cortex (PFC) of exposed guinea pig offspring.

Background High-resolution CT (HRCT) is central to the assessment of interstitial lung disease (ILD), and accurate classification of disease has important implications for patients. Evaluation of imaging features can be challenging, even for experienced thoracic radiologists. Previous work has provided equivocal evidence on the interpretation of HRCT features at ILD-related imaging.

The neural mechanisms supporting semantic association and categorization are examined in this study. Semantic association involves linking concepts through shared themes, events, or scenes, while semantic categorization organizes meanings hierarchically based on defining features. Twenty-three adults participated in an fMRI study performing categorization and association judgment tasks.

Time-Use Sequences: A Mixed-Methods Study Exploring How, When, and Where Spatiotemporal Patterns of Everyday Routines Can Strengthen Public Health Interventions.

Background: Behavior change interventions are critical for the secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease and for reducing the risk of a repeat event or mortality. However, the effectiveness of behavior change interventions is challenged by a lack of spatiotemporal contexts, limiting our understanding of factors that influence the timing and location in which day-to-day activities occur and the maintenance of behavior change. This study explored how behavior change interventions could incorporate spatiotemporal contexts of patient activities for modifying behaviors.

A dynamic mid-crustal magma domain revealed by the 2023 to 2024 Sundhnúksgígar eruptions in Iceland.

Mid-crustal magma domains are the source of many basaltic eruptions. Lavas from individual eruptions are often chemically homogeneous, suggesting that they derive from single, well-mixed magma reservoirs. The 2023 to 2024 eruptions at Sundhnúksgígar in the Svartsengi volcanic system in Iceland provide an opportunity to observe the behavior of a mid-crustal magma domain at high spatial and temporal resolution by detailed sampling and geochemical characterization.

Establishing a nonproductive, quiescent infection within monocytes is essential for the spread of human cytomegalovirus (HCMV). We investigated the mechanisms through which HCMV establishes a quiescent infection in monocytes. US28 is a virally encoded G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) that is essential for silent infections within cells of the myeloid lineage.

Silent Manifestations of Disseminated Nocardia in a Renal Transplant Patient.

This case report describes a unique presentation of disseminated nocardiosis in a 45-year-old male transplant recipient who initially presented with acute left hip pain. Despite being asymptomatic for respiratory symptoms, the patient developed a fever and subsequently exhibited hypoxia. A diagnostic workup revealed a cavitary mass in the right upper lobe and multiple pulmonary nodules, confirming silent pulmonary nocardiosis.

Background: People approaching end of life account disproportionately for health care costs, and the majority of these costs accrue in hospitals. The economic evidence base to improve value of care to this population is thin. Natural experiment methods may be helpful in bridging evidence gaps with credible causal estimates from routine data, but these methods have seldom been applied in this field.
