Background: Effective leadership and management practices contribute to responsible, high-quality research and the well-being of team members. We describe the development and initial validation of a measure assessing principal investigators' leadership and management practices and a measure of research team practices.

Methods: Using a cross-sectional survey design, 570 postdoctoral researchers funded by the National Institutes of Health reported on the perceived behaviors of their principal investigator (PI) and the research team.

Like other complex systems, medical education programs require a systematic continuous quality improvement (CQI) approach to drive effective improvement. Accreditation bodies in both undergraduate medical education (UME) and graduate medical education (GME) require programs to have effective CQI processes. Dashboards facilitate visualization and tracking of key metrics that impact medical education programming, thus driving excellence.

Background: Older adults are at increased risk of cognitive impairments including Alzheimer's disease dementia. Legally authorized representatives (LARs) can provide informed consent when a participant is no longer able to, but little is known about barriers to incorporating them in research.

Objective: Explore reasons for not asking and documenting participant decisions to appoint LARs among researchers conducting clinical intervention trials studying older adults or individuals with cognitive impairments.

Introduction: Participants and research professionals often overestimate how well participants understand and appreciate consent information for clinical trials, and experts often vary in their determinations of participant's capacity to consent to research. Past research has developed and validated instruments designed to assess participant understanding and appreciation, but the frequency with which they are utilized is unknown.

Methods: We administered a survey to clinical researchers working with older adults or those at risk of cognitive impairment ( = 1284), supplemented by qualitative interviews ( = 60).

Academic consulting centers on research and statistics are the bridge between applied researchers and statisticians and thus at the core of university-wide research. The client-centered evaluation focused on investigating the perspective of the clients in university research and statistical consulting center. A mixed-methods methodology was used in this study, specifically a concurrent triangulation design was implemented to have multiple data sources collected and analyzed simultaneously in order to identify areas of overlapping information.

Recent revisions to the Common Rule require that consent documents begin with a focused presentation of the study's key information that is organized to facilitate understanding. We surveyed 1,284 researchers working with older adults or individuals with Alzheimer's disease, supplemented with 60 qualitative interviews, to understand current use and barriers to using evidence-based formatting and plain language in key information. Researchers reported using formatting in 42% of their key information sections, and plain language in 63% of their key information sections.

The environment researchers work in influences their ethical decisions and behavior. A "climate" for research ethics in a research lab exists when members of the lab perceive that the group values and is committed to principles of research ethics. In this study, we aimed to develop a short, reliable and valid measure assessing perceptions of climate for research ethics at the lab level.

Recent revisions to the Federal Policy for the Protections of Human Subjects require that informed consent documents begin with a "concise and focused presentation" of the key information a participant requires. Key information "must be organized and presented in a way that facilitates comprehension." The regulations do not specify what information be included, nor how it must be presented to facilitate comprehension.

Unlabelled: Apolipoprotein C1 (ApoC1) is a component of multiple lipoproteins where it performs a variety of roles in lipid metabolism and transport. ApoC1 exists as both full-length and truncated isoforms. Truncation of ApoC1 has been postulated to result from the action of dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4), the target of a new class of diabetes drugs that includes sitagliptin phosphate.

Large databases (>10(6) sequences) used in metaproteomic and proteogenomic studies present challenges in matching peptide sequences to MS/MS data using database-search programs. Most notably, strict filtering to avoid false-positive matches leads to more false negatives, thus constraining the number of peptide matches. To address this challenge, we developed a two-step method wherein matches derived from a primary search against a large database were used to create a smaller subset database.

A survey of plasma proteins in approximately 1,300 individuals by MALDI-TOF MS resulted in identification of a structural polymorphism of apolipoprotein C1 (ApoC1) that was found only in persons of American Indian or Mexican ancestry. MS/MS analysis revealed that the alteration consisted of a T45S variation. The methyl group of T45 forms part of the lipid-interacting surface of ApoC1.

While lung transplant is an effective therapy for advanced lung disease, chronic allograph rejection remains a primary basis for lower survival rates than those for other solid organ transplants. This study used carefully controlled Zip-Tip extraction of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) followed by MALDI-TOF MS to identify biomarkers of chronic lung transplant rejection. Many differences were observed between controls, those who did not develop chronic rejection within 100 months, and patients who had developed chronic rejection, diagnosed as bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome (BOS).
