Limiting acetoin generation during 2,3-butanediol fermentation with Paenibacillus polymyxa using lignocellulosic hydrolysates.

Recent decarbonization efforts have led to interests in producing more bio-based chemicals. One attractive compound produced biochemically is the platform chemical known as 2,3-butanediol (2,3-BDO). In this work a mild alkaline pretreatment using sodium carbonate was performed on corn stover (CS) and switchgrass (SG) to generate hydrolysates for fermentation with the 2,3-BDO producer bacteria strain Paenibacillius polymyxa.

Production of Ethanol From Newly Developed and Improved Winter Barley Cultivars.

Winter barley has attracted strong interest as a potential feedstock for fuel ethanol production in regions with mild winter climate such as the mid-Atlantic and northeastern USA. Ten recently developed and improved winter barley cultivars and breeding lines including five hulled and five hull-less lines were experimentally evaluated for potential ethanol production. The five hulled barley lines included three released cultivars (Thoroughbred, Atlantic, and Secretariat) and two breeding lines (VA09B-34 and VA11B-4).
