We investigate the band structure of metal-dielectric photonic crystals comprising stacked organic semiconductor microcavities with silver metal mirrors incorporating crystal defects: individual unit cells with aperiodic dimensionality. Both transfer matrix simulation and experimental verification are performed to investigate the impact on the photonic band structure as a single cavity is varied in size. The resulting mid-gap defect states are shown to hybridize with a photonic band at certain resonant dimensions.

We demonstrate an electrically-driven metal-dielectric photonic crystal emitter by fabricating a series of organic light emitting diode microcavities in a vertical stack. The states of the individual microcavities are shown to split into bands of hybridized photonic energy states through interaction with adjacent cavities. The propagating photonic modes within the crystal depend sensitively on the unit cell geometry and the optical properties of the component materials.

Encasing an OLED between two planar metallic electrodes creates a Fabry-Pérot microcavity, resulting in significant narrowing of the emission bandwidth. The emission from such microcavity OLEDs depends on the overlap of the resonant cavity modes and the comparatively broadband electroluminescence spectrum of the organic molecular emitter. Varying the thickness of the microcavity changes the mode structure, resulting in a controlled change in the peak emission wavelength.

Conjugated donor-acceptor molecules with intramolecular charge transfer absorption are employed for single-component organic solar cells. Among the five types of donor-acceptor molecules, the strong push-pull structure of DTDCPB resulted in solar cells with high , an internal quantum efficiency exceeding 20%, and high exceeding 1 V with little photon energy loss around 0.7 eV.

Hybrid thin films of crystalline CuSCN and 4-(,-dimethylamino)-4'-('-methyl)stilbazolium (DAS) in three distinctively different nanostructures were obtained by electrochemical self-assembly from a single pot containing all the chemical ingredients. Their optical properties for UV-vis-NIR absorption, photoluminescence (PL), and PL excitation spectra were examined between 77 and 298 K, in comparison with solution and solid powder of DAS tosylate (DAST). Unlike all other dyes we tested before, PL of DAS was not quenched but rather enhanced when hybridized with CuSCN.

Charge-transfer complex crystals have been extensively studied because of their metallic conductivity, photoconductivity, ambipolar charge transport, and high career mobility. Numerous studies of their applications for organic electric devices such as organic field effect transistors and solar cells have reported. However, bulky single crystals of charge-transfer complexes are difficult to handle, specifically to be made into a form of a thin film.

Electron-phonon interactions of free charge-carriers in doped pi-conjugated polymers are conceptually described by 1-dimensional (1D) delocalization. Thereby, polaronic transitions fit the 1D-Froehlich model in quasi-confined chains. However, recent developments in conjugated polymers have diversified the backbones to become elaborate heterocylcic macromolecules.

Photovoltaic technology requires light-absorbing materials that are highly efficient, lightweight, low cost and stable during operation. Organolead halide perovskites constitute a highly promising class of materials, but suffer limited stability under ambient conditions without heavy and costly encapsulation. Here, we report ultrathin (3 μm), highly flexible perovskite solar cells with stabilized 12% efficiency and a power-per-weight as high as 23 W g(-1).

Diketopyrrolopyrroles (DPPs) have recently gained attention as building-blocks for organic semiconducting polymers and small molecules, however the semiconducting properties of their hydrogen-bonded (H-bonded) pigment forms have not been explored. Herein we report on the performance of three archetypical H-bonded DPP pigments, which show ambipolar carrier mobilities in the range 0.01-0.

Nanostructured hybrid thin films of CuSCN and rhodamine B (RB) are electrochemically self-assembled (ESA) by cathodic electrolysis in an ethanol/water mixture containing Cu, SCN, and RB. By selecting the solvent, Cu/SCN ratio, and the concentration of RB, we demonstrate several control parameters in the film formation. High loading of RB into the film has been achieved to reach a CuSCN:RB volume ratio of approximately 2:1.

We have developed a hole-blocking layer for bulk-heterojunction solar cells based on cross-linked polyethylenimine (PEI). We tested five different ether-based cross-linkers and found that all of them give comparable solar cell efficiencies. The initial idea that a cross-linked layer is more solvent resistant compared to a pristine PEI layer could not be confirmed.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores using a p-type inorganic semiconductor (CuSCN) to create a nanorod scaffold in polymer-fullerene bulk heterojunction solar cells, as opposed to the usual n-type ZnO scaffold.
  • The goal is to enhance charge-carrier collection and mobility in thicker solar cell samples.
  • Results indicate that as the nanorod length increases, the overall performance of the solar cells decreases, with similar trends observed in cells using both CuSCN and ZnO scaffolds.

Extensive intramolecular π-conjugation is considered to be requisite in the design of organic semiconductors. Here, two inkjet pigments, epindolidione and quinacridone, that break this design rule are explored. These molecules afford intermolecular π-stacking reinforced by hydrogen-bonding bridges.

Application-specific requirements for future lighting, displays and photovoltaics will include large-area, low-weight and mechanical resilience for dual-purpose uses such as electronic skin, textiles and surface conforming foils. Here we demonstrate polymer-based photovoltaic devices on plastic foil substrates less than 2 μm thick, with equal power conversion efficiency to their glass-based counterparts. They can reversibly withstand extreme mechanical deformation and have unprecedented solar cell-specific weight.

Ollier disease is a rare disorder characterized by the presence of multiple enchondromas and a propensity to develop malignancies. We report the case of a 7-year-old Caucasian male with Ollier disease who developed acute myelogenous leukemia (AML). This report describes a patient with Ollier disease and AML and may offer a clue into the genetic pathogenesis of these disorders.

Background: Computers are ubiquitous in the healthcare setting and have been shown to be contaminated with potentially pathogenic microorganisms. This study was performed to determine the degree of microbial contamination, the efficacy of different disinfectants, and the cosmetic and functional effects of the disinfectants on the computer keyboards.

Methods: We assessed the effectiveness of 6 different disinfectants (1 each containing chlorine, alcohol, or phenol and 3 containing quaternary ammonium) against 3 test organisms (oxacillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus [ORSA], Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus species) inoculated onto study computer keyboards.
