Condensin is a multi-subunit protein complex that belongs to the family of structural maintenance of chromosomes (SMC) complexes. Condensins regulate chromosome structure in a wide range of processes including chromosome segregation, gene regulation, DNA repair and recombination. Recent research defined the structural features and molecular activities of condensins, but it is unclear how these activities are connected to the multitude of phenotypes and functions attributed to condensins.

Article Synopsis
  • Condensins are important proteins that help organize chromosomes and regulate gene expression, but how these roles are connected is unclear.
  • Researchers used advanced techniques to study the effects of condensin inactivation on chromosome structure and gene expression in yeast, finding that inactivation decreased chromosomal interactions and disrupted specific gene clustering.
  • Surprisingly, despite these significant changes in chromosome architecture, the overall levels of mRNA (gene expression) did not show a global change, indicating that the yeast's transcriptional program remains stable even when condensins are inactive.
