The copper(I)-catalyzed oxidation of alkenes with molecular oxygen and N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI) or N-hydroxybenzotriazole (HOBt) provided α-oxygenated ketones. The reaction proceeded under a balloon of O2 at room temperature to furnish the dioxygenated products in 50-90% yield. These compounds, particularly the HOBt derivatives, can be further functionalized with phosphorus, nitrogen, and sulfur nucleophiles to give synthetically useful products.

The chromium-catalyzed allylic oxidation of triterpene 1 with O2 and N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI, 5 equiv) formed endoperoxide 2 in 76% yield at ambient temperature. Unlike standard allylic oxidations, this oxidation is catalytic in chromium because oxygen, not the chromium reagent, is the oxidant. This oxidation is sensitive to the precise structure of the substrate.

The cobalt-catalyzed peroxidation of silyl enol ethers with molecular oxygen and triethylsilane provided silyl monoperoxyketals in 54%-96% yield. These compounds serve as precursors to peroxycarbenium ions, which undergo annulations to provide 1,2-dioxolanes.
