Physicians are expected to be educators and leaders, but few medical schools offer dedicated coursework or training to prepare medical students to meet those expectations. Since 2018, Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine has offered a longitudinal Academic Medicine and Leadership (AML) Track in which medical students acquire knowledge and develop skills for academic medicine and leadership that will enhance their ability to become effective educators and leaders in their clinics, hospitals, professional associations, communities, and affiliated medical schools. This paper describes the novel AML Track, its learning activities, and some of its emerging outcomes.

Background: Students with a greater number of research experiences are more successful in the National Residency Match Program (NRMP.) As a result, approximately two-thirds of allopathic medical schools have implemented a scholarly research project (SP) as a part of their curriculum. While inclusion of an SP in the medical school curriculum increases research productivity, literature to date has not investigated the frequency with which it is a discussion topic during residency interviews.

Objectives: Developmental iron deficiency (ID) has been shown to put children at risk for compromised learning and memory capacity, and it has also been shown to impair hippocampus-dependent forms of memory as well as hippocampal synaptic transmission. Catecholamines are known to play a pivotal role in memory consolidation, and studies have demonstrated that perinatal ID alters dopaminergic systems in various brain areas. It is not known, however, whether perinatal ID impairs dopaminergic synaptic plasticity in learning and memory structures such as the hippocampus.

Evidence suggests that reflex tasks that involve sensory-motor integration may be altered in RLS patients. Trace fear conditioning is a learning task that requires the association of an auditory conditioned stimulus (CS) and a shock unconditioned stimulus (US) that are separated by a 20-s trace interval. Single neuron activity was recorded from the prelimbic and infralimbic areas of the medial prefrontal cortex in rats during trace fear conditioning or nonassociative unpaired training. Prelimbic neurons showed learning-related increases in activity to the CS and US, whereas infralimbic neurons showed learning-related decreases in activity to these stimuli.
