Educating Residents in Abdominal Wall Closure: An Overview.

Incisional hernia prevention has become an important concept for surgeons operating on the abdominal wall. Several techniques have been proposed to help decrease incisional hernia formation with suture closure of the abdominal wall being one of the cornerstones. Technical details that have been reported to decrease incisional hernia rates include achieving a 4:1 Suture to Wound length ratio and the use of a small bites technique.

Breast Trauma: A United States-Based Epidemiological Study From 2016 to 2019.

Background  Breast trauma is an often under-recognized injury, especially in female polytrauma patients. The purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence of breast injuries and their association with injury severity score (ISS) in trauma patients nationally.  Method A retrospective review was performed using data from the National Trauma Data Bank® (NTDB®) from 2016 to 2019, using all applicable International Classification of Diseases (ICD) codes for three outlined subgroups (abrasions, contusions, and open wounds/punctures/lacerations) with minors excluded.

Primary Uncomplicated Ventral Hernia Repair: Guidelines and Practice Patterns for Routine Hernia Repairs.

Surgical repair of primary umbilical and epigastric hernias are among the most common abdominal operations in the world. The hernia defects range from small (<1 cm) to large and complex even in the absence of prior incision or repair. Mesh has generally been shown to decrease recurrence rates, and its use and location of placement should be individualized for each patient.

Peritoneal Carcinomatosis From Malignant Melanoma After Wide Local Excision of a T1a Lesion: A Case Report.

Cutaneous melanoma is an aggressive skin cancer with a high propensity for distant metastasis. Peritoneal metastasis from cutaneous malignant melanoma is extremely rare and associated with a low five-year overall survival rate. This report reviews a case of a 78-year-old man with peritoneal carcinomatosis after a wide local excision of a T1a invasive malignant melanoma of the scalp 10 months prior.

Surfing injuries: A US epidemiological study from 2009-2020.

Background: The sport of surfing has grown exponentially. Early studies of surfing injuries are outdated as newer and more accessible surf technology has become available. This study's goal was to describe surfing injury patterns, incidence, and disposition of pediatric and adult surfers.

Delivery of Euthyroid Baby following Hyperthyroidism in Twin Gestation with Coexisting Complete Hydatidiform Mole.

Context: Gestational trophoblastic disease (GTD) is a rare complication of pregnancy, ranging from molar pregnancy to choriocarcinoma. Twin pregnancies with GTD and coexisting normal fetus are extremely rare with an estimated incidence of 1 case per 22,000-100,000 pregnancies. Molecular mimicry between human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) leads to gestational trophoblastic hyperthyroidism (GTH) which is further associated with increased maternal and fetal complications.

Dyslipidemia in patients with chronic kidney disease.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with high risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD). This association is multifactorial, but CKD is often associated with dyslipidemia, which likely contributes. Patients with CKD have dyslipidemia even at early stages of renal dysfunction and dyslipidemia tends to progress with deterioration of kidney function.
