Objective: Sports ultrasound (US) is becoming popular in diagnosing musculoskeletal injuries. This study, also called the Pediatric Distal Radius Ultrasound Study (PeDRUS), compared the diagnostic accuracy of sports US with plain radiographs in possible distal radius buckle fractures in pediatric population.
Methods: In this prospective observational study, patients (2-15 years) presenting to an outpatient orthopedic injury clinic with distal forearm injuries without deformity were recruited.
The ultrastructure of the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) in skeletal muscles was compared among different reptile species (watersnake, boa constrictor, lizard, and turtle) and a mammal (mouse). Morphometric analysis demonstrates a pattern of increasing calsequestrin (CASQ) content in the lumen of SR from turtle to lizard, watersnake, and boa constrictor, and this content is in all cases higher than in mouse. In all reptiles sampled except turtle, CASQ is not confined to the junctional sarcoplasmic reticulum (jSR) cisternae as it is in other species.

Under these conditions, the intermandibular muscles are highly stretched but subsequently recover normal function. In the highly stretched condition we observed in snakes, sarcomere length (SL) increased 210% its resting value (SL0), and actin and myosin filaments no longer overlapped.

The skin of squamates consists of a keratinized epidermis divided into thick scale and thinner, folded interscale regions underlain by a dermis containing a complex array of fibrous connective tissues. We examined the skin of the lower jaw of watersnakes (Nerodia sipedon) to determine how skin morphology changes when highly stretched during ingestion of large prey. Video records of skin behavior in the lower jaws of watersnakes feeding on fish or anesthetized watersnakes being stretched on an Instron machine showed that most skin extension involves the interscale skin.

This calcium-binding protein localizes to the junctional SR (jSR) cisternae, where it is responsible for the storage of large amounts of Ca(2+), whereas it is usually absent, at least in its polymerized form, in the free SR. The retention of CASQ inside the jSR is due partly to its association with other jSR proteins, such as junctin and triadin, and partly to its ability to polymerize, in a high Ca(2+) environment, into an intricate gel that holds the protein in place.
