Article Synopsis
  • Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are harmful pollutants linked to potential damage to human semen, but prior studies show conflicting results regarding their impact on sperm quality.
  • The study involved 143 high school and university students from a PCB-polluted region in Italy, analyzing blood and semen samples to assess PCB levels and their relation to sperm motility and morphology.
  • Findings indicated that higher semen PCB concentrations correlated with reduced sperm motility (19% decrease) and normal morphology (23% decrease), but serum PCB levels showed inconclusive associations with sperm quality parameters.

This study aims at providing an accurate and up-to-date quantification of the dose-response association between cigarette smoking and gastric cancer (GC) risk, overall and by subsite. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of case-control and cohort studies on the association between cigarette smoking and GC risk published up to January 2023. We estimated pooled relative risks (RR) of GC and its subsites according to smoking status, intensity, duration, and time since quitting.

This study evaluated the relationship between negative symptoms, daily time use (productive/non-productive activities, PA/NPA), and negative emotions in schizophrenia-spectrum disorders (SSDs): 618 individuals with SSDs (311 residential care patients [RCPs], 307 outpatients) were surveyed about socio-demographic, clinical (BPRS, BNSS) and daily time use (paper-and-pencil Time Use Survey completed twice/week) characteristics. Among them 57 RCPs and 46 outpatients, matched to 112 healthy controls, also underwent ecological monitoring of emotions (8 times/day for a week) through Experience Sampling Method (ESM). RCPs spent significantly less time in PA than outpatients.

Article Synopsis
  • The analysis from the Altshock-2 registry aimed to compare the clinical features and management of cardiogenic shock due to acutely decompensated heart failure (ADHF-CS) versus that caused by acute myocardial infarction (AMI-CS).
  • It found that patients with ADHF-CS were younger but had worse kidney and liver function, leading to longer hospital stays and increased use of heart replacement therapies.
  • In terms of treatment, norepinephrine was more common for AMI-CS, while epinephrine was more frequently used for ADHF-CS, and overall in-hospital mortality rates were similar between the two groups.
