Article Synopsis
  • Tear lactoferrin is crucial for protecting the ocular surface, and a decrease in its production can raise infection risks and damage the eye's epithelial layers.
  • The study investigated whether corneal and conjunctival epithelia could produce lactoferrin and if cultured conjunctival cells could be used to explore its gene expression regulation.
  • Results show that bovine conjunctival and corneal epithelia produce lactoferrin and that human lactoferrin gene expression can be analyzed using these cultured cells, confirming their potential for in vitro studies.

Cyclooxygenases (COXs) are the key enzymes in the production of prostaglandins (PGs) and exist in two isoforms. Isoform 1 (COX-1) is constitutively expressed in most tissues, whereas cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) is rapidly induced by a variety of different stimuli. In this study, we have quantitatively analyzed mRNA expression of COX-1 and COX-2 and protein distribution during corneal reparative processes after wound.
