Significance: This multicenter study assessed clinical and psychological aspects of infantile nystagmus syndrome (INS) focusing on its management and nonsurgical treatment.
Purpose: This study aimed to assess clinical features, management, relationship life, and psychological impact in a group of patients with nystagmus onset in pediatric age.
Methods: This observational study included patients diagnosed with INS referred to two Italian centers from January 1, 2017, to December 31, 2020.
Introduction: In this work, our aim is to report the functional outcomes of cataract surgery with smaller-incision new-generation miniature telescope (SING IMT) implantation followed by rehabilitation training in patients with central visual loss due to late-stage age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
Methods: This retrospective study included patients who were monocularly implanted with SING IMT and then followed a rehabilitation program based on 6 biweekly sessions focused on visual abilities, reading, writing, visual motor integration and mobility. A total of 11 participants were included in this study.
Cardio-facio-cutaneous syndrome (CFCS) is a rare genetic disorder belonging to the RASopathies, a group of developmental syndromes caused by upregulated RAS/MAPK signaling. Pathogenic variants affecting four genes, KRAS, BRAF, MAP2K1 and MAP2K2, encoding core signal transducers of the pathway, underlie the condition. Major clinical features include a distinctive facies, ectodermal and cardiac anomalies, reduced postnatal growth, intellectual disability, and musculoskeletal abnormalities.

In order to decide on the success of this graft, the best known radiographic assessments lacks precision. Kamperos recently proposed a 3D CBCT score that simultaneously assesses alveolar bone height and thickness, as well as the nasal floor level.

Methods: We collected data from ocular and orthotic examinations, including eye motility, intraocular pressure measurement, best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) measurement, objective refraction measurement, fundus examination, macular and optic disk OCTA examination. All subjects were imaged with solix fullrange OCT.
Da Vinci three-dimensional (3D) system has been increasingly used in customary surgical settings, gaining fundamental relevance for abdominal, urological, and gynecological laparoscopic surgery. The aim of this research is to evaluate the degree of discomfort and potential changes in the binocular vision and ocular motility of surgical operators, who employ 3D vision systems during Da Vinci robotic surgery. Twenty-four surgeons were enrolled in the study, including twelve who typically use the 3D Da Vinci system and twelve who routinely employ 2D system.

Esophageal high-resolution manometry (HRM) has been used in the diagnosis of motility disorders affecting the swallowing process. The aim of this study was to analyze swallowing functions in NI children by using HRM in order to establish swallow parameters identifying inhalation risk.

Objective: Thyroid-associated orbitopathy (TAO) is the most frequent cause of extraocular muscle enlargement, with consecutive restrictive strabismus. The main muscles involved are inferior and medial rectus, resulting in horizontal esotropia and/or vertical strabismus. Surgery may either establish or improve binocular single vision.

This is a retrospective observational multicenter cohort study. Patients with coexisting ocular motility disorders, comitant and incomitant strabismus, ptosis and dynamic eyelid disorders who have never undergone surgery were enrolled throughout a 3-years a study period.

Since most chlamydial infections are asymptomatic, facilitating the transmission of the pathogen in the population, regular screening is recommended for at-risk sexually active individuals. Hence, a sensitive, specific, inexpensive diagnostic test that can be executed efficiently and quickly to yield results would be helpful.

Objective: To compare the effects of a commercial intranasal (IN) and intramuscular (IM) vaccine against bovine respiratory disease (BRD) complex viruses on bronchoalveolar fluid cells of healthy heifers.
Methods: 21 healthy heifers were assigned to three treatment groups: control (CO, N = 7), intranasally vaccinated (IN) (n = 7), and intramuscularly vaccinated (IM) (n = 7).
Objectives: To compare fosfomycin susceptibility testing with the commercial agar dilution (AD) test, AD Fosfomycin (Liofilchem, Roseto degli Abruzzi, Italy) and the reference AD method, using a collection of multidrug-resistant (MDR) Enterobacterales and Pseudomonas aeruginosa clinical isolates.
Methods: The collection included 119 carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales, 53 Enterobacterales producing acquired AmpC-type and/or extended-spectrum β-lactamases and 38 carbapenemase-producing P. aeruginosa, including representatives of different high-risk clones.
Both malaria and relapsing fever Borrelia are infectious diseases characterized by fever, headache, myalgia, hepatosplenomegaly and tendency to relapse. Exflagellation of microgametocyte in malarial parasites is seen only in the definitive host, i.e.

Methods: Susceptibility to imipenem, meropenem and ertapenem was assayed using the reference broth microdilution method and several commercial methods (Vitek2, MicroScan, Etest, MIC Test Strip) starting from the same bacterial suspension. Susceptibility to imipenem and meropenem was also tested by Sensititre and disc diffusion (Bio-Rad).
Gastrointestinal basidiobolomycosis (GIB), an unusual fungal infection caused by the fungus Basidiobolus ranarum, is rarely reported in the medical literature. GIB is difficult to diagnose because its clinical presentation is non-specific and has no identifiable risk factors. We report here the first case of GIB diagnosed in Italy in a patient suffering from a duodenal ulcer with perforation.

All methodologies showed a Categorical Agreement and Essential Agreement of ≤69% and ≤72%, respectively, revealing a very low concordance with AD.

This multicenter study investigated the frequency of ESBL-producing pathogens and MDR Clostridium difficile in clinical specimens from LTCF residents in Italy. During October 2014-March 2015, all urine and diarrheic fecal samples from LTCF residents (≥65 years) with suspected urinary tract infection or C.

Objectives: To determine prevalence and risk factors for colonization by multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs) in long-term care facility (LTCF) residents in Italy. Genotypes of MDRO isolates were investigated.
Methods: A point-prevalence study was conducted at 12 LTCFs located in four Italian cities (2 February to 14 March 2015).
Background: Multi-transfused thalassemia major (TM) patients frequently develop severe endocrine complications, mainly due to iron overload, anemia, and chronic liver disease, which require prompt diagnosis, treatment and follow-up by specialists. The most common endocrine complication documented is hypogonadotropic hypogonadism which increases with age and associated comorbidities. It is thus important for physicians to have a clear understanding of the pathophysiology and management of this disorder.

An accurate estimate of the impact of toxoplasmosis on the population in Italy is not available. We performed a cross-sectional study on individuals living in Italy to assess: (1) differences in access to Toxo testing and in the prevalence of recent and past Toxoplasma gondii infection according to gender and age, and (2) the clinical impact of disease burden on the male patient subset. Reason for testing, condition of in- or outpatient and clinical data were analysed.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the existence of a relationship between subjective anger and body posture in 28 women, aged between 20 and 39 years, with a normal body mass index (or underweight) and an absence of neurological, psychiatric or musculoskeletal disorders. The postural parameters photographed were the inclination of the shoulders, protrusion of the head, hyperextension of the knees and shoulder elevation.

Shrimp, crabs, lobster, and salmon are of particular interest in the human diet due to their substantial provision of omega-3 fatty acids (n-3/PUFAs) and the antioxidant carotenoid astaxanthin (ASTA). However, the optimal ratio between these nutraceuticals in natural sources is apparently the key factor for maximum protection against most neuro-motor disorders.
