Purpose: Sexual and gender minority (SGM) populations experience cancer treatment and survival disparities; however, inconsistent sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) data collection within clinical settings and the cancer surveillance system precludes population-based research toward health equity for this population. This qualitative study examined how hospital and central registry abstractors receive and interact with SOGI information and the challenges that they face in doing so.

Methods: We conducted semi-structured interviews with 18 abstractors at five Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) registries, as well as seven abstractors from commission on cancer (CoC)-accredited hospital programs in Iowa.

High patient volume in fellowship programs can affect learning, wellness, and patient outcomes. Training programs must find ways to mitigate high consultation volume to protect the learning environment. This survey describes average new consults and average censuses for infectious diseases training programs and strategies implemented to mitigate high volume.

Background: Researchers often rely on hospital tumor registry data to provide comprehensive cancer therapy information. The purpose of this study was to determine the completeness of treatment information found in the abstracted records of patients seen at an academic medical center located in a rural Midwestern state.

Approach: The cohort included 846 Iowa residents diagnosed with a single malignant tumor of the female breast, colon/rectum, lung, pancreas, or prostate in 2017-2018 with an abstract recorded by the academic medical center and at least 1 other hospital.

Objective: To evaluate the association of treatment with nebulized tranexamic acid (TXA) with rates of operative intervention in post-tonsillectomy hemorrhage (PTH).

Methods: Single tertiary-referral center and satellite hospitals, retrospective cohort of adult and pediatric patients who were diagnosed with PTH in 2015-2022 and treated with nebulized TXA and standard care, compared with an age- and gender-matched control cohort treated with standard care. Patients were typically treated in the emergency department with a single dose of 500mg/5 mL TXA delivered via nebulizer.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted to assess the risk of SARS-CoV-2 transmission to healthcare workers during myringotomy and tympanostomy tube insertions, focusing on aerosol generation.
  • An optical particle sizer was used to measure aerosol levels during the procedures, and no increase in aerosol particles was detected at a distance of 30 cm from the ear canal.
  • The initial findings provide some assurance regarding the safety of the operating team, but further research is needed to confirm these results and establish solid guidelines.

Objective: Determine the impact of ketorolac on post-tonsillectomy hemorrhage (PTH) and narcotic administration in children undergoing tonsillectomy.

Methods: Retrospective case series from 2013 to 2017. Patients younger than 18 years undergoing tonsillectomy were included.

Objective: To correlate the clinical severity of laryngomalacia (LM) with endoscopic findings, swallowing evaluations and polysomnography in a cohort of patients. Method: We conducted a retrospective analysis between 2017-2018 on a cohort of patients diagnosed with upper airway obstruction (UAO), stridor, noisy breathing or laryngomalacia. This study took place at the Pediatric Pulmonology Department, Riley Children's Hospital, Indianapolis, United States of America.

Objective: The primary aim of this study was to demonstrate that indiscriminate pathologic evaluation of supraglottoplasty specimens is unnecessary and does not influence postoperative management. The secondary objective was to determine the costs associated with pathologic evaluation of supraglottoplasty specimens.

Methods: A planned chart review was conducted to evaluate data from consecutive patients undergoing supraglottoplasty.

Objectives: To systematically evaluate the clinico-diagnostic profile and management outcomes of otorhinolaryngologic manifestations of Extranodal Rosai-Dorfman Disease (ENRDD) in the pediatric population.

Methods: The search terms Rosai Dorfman Disease and Sinus Histiocytosis were used to query PubMed, Ovid/Medline, and Scopus databases from inception through September 30, 2018. Studies were systematically reviewed in accordance to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) protocol.

Purpose: It is unknown how sepsis survivors conceptualize health-related quality of life (HRQL). We aimed to identify important HRQL domains for this population.

Methods: A literature search was performed to inform an interview guide.

Background: Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Cancer Registries (SEER) began collecting human papillomavirus (HPV) status for upper aerodigestive tract cancers in 2010. However, classification of p16-testing was not included in the Collaborative Stage coding guidelines, potentially leading to inconsistent coding.

Methods: The HPV values for Iowa patients with oropharyngeal cancers (n = 824) were recoded based on modified guidelines that included p16 test results, and compared with the original guidelines.

Chemists have created molecular machines and switches with specific mechanical responses that were typically demonstrated in solution, where mechanically relevant motion is dissipated in the Brownian storm. The next challenge consists of designing specific mechanisms through which the action of individual molecules is transmitted to a supramolecular architecture, with a sense of directionality. Cellular microtubules are capable of meeting such a challenge.

Chiral azobenzenes can be used as photoswitchable dopants to control supramolecular helices in liquid crystals. However, the lack of thermal stability of the cis-isomer precludes envisioning the generation of long-lived supramolecular helices with light. Here, this study demonstrates thermally stable and axially chiral azobenzene switches that can be used as chiral dopants to create supramolecular helices from (achiral) nematic liquid crystals.

Importance: Tonsillectomy is one of the most common procedures performed by otolaryngologists and is associated with postoperative bleeding. Bleed rates are usually monitored by self-report.

Objective: To evaluate whether using automated capture and reporting of pediatric posttonsillectomy bleeding is feasible and accurate compared with traditional self-reporting by the surgical team.

Robin sequence (RS) is a commonly encountered triad of micrognathia, glossoptosis, and airway obstruction, with or without a cleft palate. The management of airway obstruction is of paramount importance, and multiple reviews and retrospective series outline the diagnosis and treatment of RS. This article focuses on the multidisciplinary nature of RS and the specialists' contributions and thought processes regarding the management of the RS child from birth to skeletal maturity.

Motion in plants often relies on dynamic helical systems as seen in coiling tendrils, spasmoneme springs, and the opening of chiral seedpods. Developing nanotechnology that would allow molecular-level phenomena to drive such movements in artificial systems remains a scientific challenge. Herein, we describe a soft device that uses nanoscale information to mimic seedpod opening.

The metal-driven self-assembly processes of a covalent polyoxometalate (POM)-based hybrid bearing remote terpyridine binding sites have been investigated. In a strongly dissociating solvent, a discrete metallomacrocycle, described as a molecular triangle, is formed and characterized by 2D diffusion NMR spectroscopy (DOSY), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and molecular modeling. In a less dissociating solvent, the primary supramolecular structure, combining negatively charged POMs and cationic metal linkers, further self-assemble through intermolecular electrostatic interactions in a reversible process.
