The capacity for strategic thinking about the payoff-relevant actions of conspecifics is not well understood across species. We use game theory to make predictions about choices and temporal dynamics in three abstract competitive situations with chimpanzee participants. Frequencies of chimpanzee choices are extremely close to equilibrium (accurate-guessing) predictions, and shift as payoffs change, just as equilibrium theory predicts.

Effect of parent artery expansion by stent placement in cerebral aneurysms.

Background: Stent placement for cerebral aneurysms leads to a decrease in blood flow. This occurs not only through the direct obstruction of flow but also by the expansion of the parent artery. The latter has been observed in several clinical studies.

Background: Actinobacteria of the genus Nocardia usually live in soil or water and play saprophytic roles, but they also opportunistically infect the respiratory system, skin, and other organs of humans and animals. Primarily because of the clinical importance of the strains, some Nocardia genomes have been sequenced, and genome sequences have accumulated. Genome sizes of Nocardia strains are similar to those of Streptomyces strains, the producers of most antibiotics.

Case of primary cutaneous peripheral T-cell lymphoma, not otherwise specified, with characteristics of follicular helper T cells.

We report a case of an 88-year-old woman with a decalvant, erythematous, ulcerated tumor extending from the right temporal to occipital region. Histopathological analysis revealed a dense infiltration of medium-to-large-sized atypical cells throughout the entire dermis. The result of immunohistochemical analysis showed that the infiltrating T cells expressed programmed death-1 (PD-1), Bcl-6 and CXCL13.

Development of cycling probe-based real-time PCR system to detect Fusarium species and Fusarium solani species complex (FSSC).

In the present study, we developed a new real-time PCR system based on the cycling probe technology (CPT), which is composed of two single tube real-time PCR assays: the Fusarium genus-specific assay and the Fusarium solani species complex (FSSC)-specific assay with primers targeting the 28s ribosomal RNA gene. The Fusarium genus-specific assay was shown to be highly specific, detecting all reference Fusarium strains with no cross-reaction with other reference fungal strains, such as Aspergillus spp. and human DNA.

Key amino acid residues for the endo-processive activity of GH74 xyloglucanase.

Unlike endo-dissociative-xyloglucanases, Paenibacillus XEG74 is an endo-processive xyloglucanase that contains four unique tryptophan residues in the negative subsites (W61 and W64) and the positive subsites (W318 and W319), as indicated by three-dimensional homology modelling. Selective replacement of the positive subsite residues with alanine mutations reduced the degree of processive activity and resulted in the more endo-dissociative-activity. The results showed that W318 and W319, which are found in the positive subsites, are essential for processive degradation and are responsible for maintaining binding interactions with xyloglucan polysaccharide through a stacking effect.

Epstein-Barr virus-associated T/natural killer-cell lymphomas in the elderly: the first consensus meeting in Kofu 2013.

From a clinicopathological conference on nine elderly patients with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-associated T/natural killer (NK)-cell lymphoma, we have addressed the patients' backgrounds, clinical manifestations, histopathological findings, cytogenesis, complications and prognoses. Among these elderly patients (>65 years old), seven patients had extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma, nasal type (ENKL) with an NK-cell phenotype, and two patients had EBV(+) T-cell lymphomas or lymphoproliferative disorders (LPD) with cutaneous lesions mimicking pityriasis lichenoides et varioliformis acuta (PLEVA) or hydroa vacciniforme (HV). No patients had a previous episode of EBV-related symptoms such as infectious mononucleosis, chronic active EBV infection, HV or hypersensitivity to mosquito bites.

[Strategy for surgery in familial adenomatous polyposis patients with invasive colorectal cancer].

Purpose: Total proctocolectomy with ileal pouch-anal anastomosis (IPAA) has been established as the standard operative procedure for classic familial adenomatous polyposis( FAP). However, it is unclear which type of surgery should be undertaken for FAP patients with invasive colorectal cancer in clinical practice. This study evaluated the outcome of different surgeries performed in FAP patients with invasive colorectal cancer.

[Effect of chemotherapy in primary tumor of MSI-H colon cancer aged 50 years or younger].

Microsatellite instability( MSI) in colorectal carcinoma is reportedly associated with resistance to 5-fluorouracil-based chemotherapy. Moreover, colorectal cancer patients aged ≤ 50 years could potentially have Lynch syndrome. In the present study, we examined 11 colorectal cancer patients with unresectable Stage IV disease who underwent resection of the primary tumor between January 2006 and December 2012.

[Efficacy of oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy in Stage IV colorectal cancer patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis].

Purpose: This retrospective study evaluated the outcome of oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy for peritoneal metastasis from colorectal cancer.

Patients And Methods: The study included 49 patients with peritoneal metastasis from colorectal cancer who underwent oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy between January 2006 and November 2012 and 25 patients who underwent systematic chemotherapy before oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy. Patient background characteristics, overall survival(l OS), and prognostic outcomes were examined.

[Theoretical background of our original single-incision laparoscopic-assisted surgery technique for colon cancer via a periumbilical approach].

We assessed the theoretical background of our original single-incision laparoscopic-assisted surgery( SILS) technique involving a periumbilical approach. The subjects included 10 cases who underwent periumbilical SILS colectomy and had their surgical wounds photographed before and after skin incision between September 2009 and October 2010. Using an image analyzer, we estimated the theoretical oval area after a 3/4-circumferential periumbilical skin incision, the actual oval area after placement of the wound retractor, and the length of the skin incision.

[Outcomes of patients with small bowel carcinoma treated with appropriate chemotherapy selected on the basis of genetic analysis findings].

Small bowel carcinoma is a rare tumor, for which a standardized chemotherapy regimen has not yet been established. Further, this tumor may belong to the group of Lynch syndrome-associated tumors, which are resistant to 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) -based chemotherapy. We investigated mismatch repair protein expression and K-ras gene mutation status in 8 patients with aggressive small bowel carcinoma and determined the chemotherapy regimen used in these patients.

The Arena System: a novel shared touch-panel apparatus for the study of chimpanzee social interaction and cognition.

We report on the development of a novel shared touch-panel apparatus for examining a diverse range of topics in great ape social cognition and interaction. Our apparatus-named the Arena System-is composed of a single multitouch monitor that spans across two separate testing booths, so that individuals situated in each booth have tactile access to half of the monitor and visual access to the whole monitor. Additional components of the system include a smart-film barrier able to restrict visual access between the booths, as well as two automated feeding devices that dispense food rewards to the subjects.

Oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy in patients aged 75 years or older with metastatic colorectal cancer.

Molecular identification and antimicrobial susceptibility of Nocardia spp. isolated from bovine mastitis in Brazil.

Nocardia spp. infections can cause severe damage to the mammary gland due to suppurative pyogranulomatous lesions and lack of clinical cure in response to conventional antimicrobial therapy. Although Nocardia infections are considered relatively uncommon in cows, there has been an apparent worldwide increase in the incidence of bovine mastitis caused by Nocardia spp, perhaps due to environmental transmission of this ubiquitous pathogen.

Macrophages are involved in many essential immune functions. Their role in cell-autonomous innate immunity is reinforced by interferon-γ (IFN-γ), which is mainly secreted by proliferating type 1 T helper cells and natural killer cells. Previously, we showed that IFN-γ activates autophagy via p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (p38 MAPK), but the biological importance of this signalling pathway has not been clear.

Positron emission tomography (PET) with (18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose ((18)F-FDG), a glucose analog, is widely used throughout the world as an indispensable imaging modality for the management of cancer treatment. This article reviews the pioneering achievements of PET in oncology with a focus on the development of PET that occurred from 1980 through the early-1990s. (18)F-FDG was first applied for imaging of animal tumors in 1980 and for brain tumor imaging clinically in 1982.

Macrophages are engaged in many essential host functions, and their activation is a dynamic process that results in diverse functional outcomes such as the potentiation of bactericidal activity and production of chemokines, cytokines, and mediators that coordinate the inflammatory response. This pro-inflammatory response is bimodal, comprising a "prime" event, classically through interferon-γ (IFN-γ), and a "trigger," such as lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Recently, autophagy, which is one of the major degradative pathways in eukaryotic cells, has been shown to play an important role in both IFN-γ-primed and LPS-activated macrophages.

Method for rapid detection and identification of chaetomium and evaluation of resistance to peracetic acid.

In the beverage industry, peracetic acid has been increasingly used as a disinfectant for the filling machinery and environment due to merits of leaving no residue, it is safe for humans, and its antiseptic effect against fungi and endospores of bacteria. Recently, Chaetomium globosum and Chaetomium funicola were reported resistant to peracetic acid; however, little is known concerning the detail of peracetic acid resistance. Therefore, we assessed the peracetic acid resistance of the species of Chaetomium and related genera under identical conditions and made a thorough observation of the microstructure of their ascospores by transmission electron microscopy.
