A parallel dimeric Aβ(1-40) peptide was prepared, and its structural and fibrillogenic characteristics were examined. The covalent linking of the peptide strongly facilitated the spontaneous formation of thioflavin-T-active, fibrillar aggregates rich in β strands without a lag phase. However, the aggregates formed by the dimeric peptide did not exhibit "seeding activity" to catalyze the formation of amyloid fibrils by wild-type Aβ(1-40) molecules.

The abnormal aggregation and subsequent deposition of amyloid β-protein (Aβ) in the brain are considered central to the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease. The two major species of Aβ are Aβ40 and Aβ42, present at an approximate ratio of 9 : 1. Accumulating evidence suggests that neuronal membranes are an important platform of amyloidogenesis by Aβ.

After the 2011 Fukushima nuclear power plant accident, the prevalence of metabolic syndrome sharply increased in municipalities near the nuclear power plant, where a massive evacuation of community residents occurred (the evacuation area). However, after the initial increase, the rate of increase in metabolic syndrome in the evacuation area was slower than that in the surrounding area (non-evacuation area). In this study, we compared the incidence of and recovery from metabolic syndrome as well as its prevalence between evacuation and non-evacuation areas during the 10 years after the accident to explore whether the slower increase in metabolic syndrome after the initial increase in the evacuation area stemmed from suppressed incidence or from fast recovery.

Article Synopsis
  • A study explored how obesity affects kidney outcomes specifically in patients with immunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAN), considering factors such as sex and kidney function.
  • Researchers analyzed data from patients in Japan, categorizing them into normal and obese groups based on body mass index (BMI), and focused on renal function decline and the need for replacement therapy.
  • Findings indicated that while obesity didn't show a direct impact on kidney prognosis, it was linked to having more risk factors for IgAN progression, particularly affecting women in terms of proteinuria and contributing to kidney damage like tubular atrophy.
