Nanofiltration (NF) offers a scalable and energy-efficient method for lithium extraction from salt lakes. However, the selective separation of lithium from magnesium, particularly in brines with high magnesium concentrations, remains a significant challenge due to the close similarity in their hydrated ionic radii. The limited Li/Mgselectivity of current NF membranes is primarily attributed to insufficient control over pore size and surface charge.

Age-dependent sensory impairment, memory loss, and cognitive decline are generally attributed to neuron loss, synaptic dysfunction, and decreased neuronal activities over time. Concurrently, increased neuronal activity is reported in humans and other organisms during aging. However, it is unclear whether neuronal hyperactivity is the cause of cognitive impairment or a compensatory mechanism of circuit dysfunction.

Ion-selective membranes (ISM) with sub-nanosized pore channels hold significant potential for applications in saline wastewater treatment and resource recovery. Herein, novel synergistic ion channels featuring bi-periodic structures were constructed through the coordination of functional Cyclen (quaternary_1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane, Q_Cyclen) and Cu-m-Phenylenediamine (Cu-MPD) to develop supramolecular membranes for lithium extraction. The exterior quaternary ammonium-rich sites exhibit a significant Donnan exclusion effect, resulting in tremendous mono/divalent (Li/Mg) ion selectivity; while the interior regular-confined channels of Cyclen yield a fast vehicular pathway, facilitating water molecules and Li ion-selective transport.

Covalent organic networks (CONs) are considered ideal for precise molecular separation compared with traditional polymer membranes because their pores have a sharp molecular weight cut-off and a robust structure. However, challenges remain with regard to tuning pores as a prerequisite for facile membrane fabrication to a defect-free layer. Herein, a highly conjugated amino-porphyrin is used and exploited its tunable stacking behavior to fabricate porphyrin-based polyamide CONs with ordered structures through interfacial polymerization with acyl chlorides.

Pre-concentration can reduce the total production costs in the pharmaceutical industry. Organic solvent forward osmosis (OSFO) is a suitable pre-concentration method because of its nonthermal nature, low capital cost, and potential for achieving high-degree concentrations. In a previous study, we first demonstrated a high-degree OSFO concentration.

Finely tuning the pore structure of traditional nanofiltration (NF) membranes is challenging but highly effective for achieving efficient separations. Herein, we propose a concept of using macrocyclic amines (1,4,7-triazacyclononane, 3A; 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane, 4A1; and 1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane, 4A2) with different intra-annular apertures to finely modulate the pore structure of microporous membranes via interfacial polymerization (IP). The boost in the intracavity size of the building blocks results in heightened steric hindrance of these amine monomers, leading to a controlled increase in membrane pore size, as demonstrated by both film characterizations and multiscale simulations.

A tough ion gel membrane containing a CO-philic ionic liquid, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tricyanomethanide ([Emim][C(CN)]), was developed, and its CO permeation properties were evaluated under humid conditions at elevated temperatures. Pebax 1657, which is a diblock copolymer composed of a polyamide block and a polyethylene oxide block, was used as the gel network of the ion gel membrane to prepare a tough ion gel with good ionic liquid-holding properties. The polyamide block formed a semicrystalline structure in [Emim][C(CN)] to toughen the ion gel membrane an energy dissipation mechanism.

The ion permeability and selectivity of membranes are crucial in nanofluidic behavior, impacting industries ranging from traditional to advanced manufacturing. Herein, we demonstrate the engineering of ion-conductive membranes featuring angstrom-scale ion-transport channels by introducing ionic polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimers for ion separation. The exterior quaternary ammonium-rich structure contributes to significant electrostatic charge exclusion due to enhanced local charge density; the interior protoplasmic channels of PAMAM dendrimer are assembled to provide additional degrees of free volume.

While depolarization of the neuronal membrane is known to evoke the neurotransmitter release from synaptic vesicles, hyperpolarization is regarded as a resting state of chemical neurotransmission. Here, we report that hyperpolarizing neurons can actively signal neural information by employing undocked hemichannels. We show that UNC-7, a member of the innexin family in functions as a hemichannel in thermosensory neurons and transmits temperature information from the thermosensory neurons to their postsynaptic interneurons.

Metal-organic framework (MOF) membranes with rich functionality and tunable pore system are promising for precise molecular separation; however, it remains a challenge to develop defect-free high-connectivity MOF membrane with high water stability owing to uncontrollable nucleation and growth rate during fabrication process. Herein, we report on a confined-coordination induced intergrowth strategy to fabricate lattice-defect-free Zr-MOF membrane towards precise molecular separation. The confined-coordination space properties (size and shape) and environment (water or DMF) were regulated to slow down the coordination reaction rate via controlling the counter-diffusion of MOF precursors (metal cluster and ligand), thereby inter-growing MOF crystals into integrated membrane.

Chemically converted graphene oxide laminate membranes, which exhibit stable interlayered nanochannels in aqueous environments, are receiving increasing attention owing to their potential for selective water and ion permeation. However, how the molecular properties of conversion agents influence the stabilization of nanochannels and how effectively nanochannels are stabilized have rarely been studied. In this study, mono-, di-, and tri-saccharide molecules of glucose (Glu), maltose (Glu2), and maltotriose (Glu3) are utilized, respectively, to chemically modify graphene oxide (GO).

In this work, a novel polydopamine/reduced graphene oxide (PDA/rGO) nanofiltration membrane was prepared to efficiently and stably remove radioactive strontium ions under an alkaline environment. Through the incorporation of PDA and thermal reduction treatment, not only has the interlayer spacing of graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets been appropriately regulated but also an improved antiswelling property has been achieved. The dosage of GO, reaction time with PDA, mass ratio of PDA to GO, and thermal treatment temperature have been optimized to achieve a high-performance PDA/rGO membrane.
