TLS (Translocated in LipoSarcoma), also termed FUS, is a multifunctional protein implicated in diverse cellular events such as maintaining genome integrity and regulating gene expression. We have focused on the role of TLS as a coregulator in transcriptional regulation. In the process of investigating TLS-binding proteins, we found that PRMT1 (protein arginine methyltransferase 1) was in complex with TLS.

Recent studies on butterflies have indicated that their colour vision system is almost species specific. To address the question of how this remarkable diversity evolved, we investigated the eyes of the glacial Apollo, Parnassius glacialis, a living fossil species belonging to the family Papilionidae. We identified four opsins in the Parnassius eyes--an ultraviolet- (PgUV), a blue- (PgB), and two long wavelength (PgL2, PgL3)-absorbing types--and localized their mRNAs within the retina.

A 19-year-old girl with T-lymphoblastic lymphoma (T-LBL) was referred to our hospital because of refractory disease. After complete remission was achieved by the JALSG ALL-97 protocol, she received a bone marrow transplantation (BMT) from an unrelated, HLA-matched donor with myeloablative conditioning. Four months after BMT, T-LBL relapsed and donor lymphocyte infusion was ineffective.

We previously showed that circadian genes clock, bmal1, cry1, cry2, per1, and per2 are expressed and function as maternal mRNA regulating events in the oocytes and preimplantation embryos of mice. Recent evidence indicates however that either or both expression profiles of circadian genes in some tissues, and transcript sequences of circadian genes, differ to generate the physiological differences between diurnal and nocturnal species. We therefore investigated the expression profiles of circadian genes in oocytes and preimplantation embryos of species other than mice, namely cattle and rabbits, representing diurnal and nocturnal species, respectively, and determined the protein sequences of circadian genes in these species.

The cynomolgus monkey is used to study drug metabolism because of its evolutionary closeness to humans. Despite their importance, regional distribution of cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes including CYP3As in the liver and small intestine, the major sites of drug metabolism, has not been fully investigated in cynomolgus monkeys. In this study, we measured mRNA expression levels of 14 CYPs in the CYP1, 2, and 3 subfamilies, including orthologs of human CYP3A4 and CYP3A5, in the liver and small intestine of cynomolgus monkeys.

The prognosis of angioimmunoblastic T cell lymphoma (AITL) is poor because of chemotherapy-resistance and the short duration of remission. In recent years, cyclosporin A (CyA) has been employed as a alternative treatment for AITL in some patients with the rationale that CyA inhibits the activity and proliferation of neoplastic T cells. We herein report 4 chemotherapy-resistant AITL patients who were treated with oral CyA.

Background: Anteversion of an acetabular component often is difficult to ascertain in patients with THA in whom excessively anteverted or retroverted femurs may result in limited ROM or risk of dislocation. Restriction of motion, however, is determined by the combination of version of both components.

Questions/purposes: We therefore determined the combined anteversion values that provide adequate ROM.

  • A 64-year-old woman with progressive AA amyloidosis related to rheumatoid arthritis was hospitalized due to hypovolemic shock, which improved with intensive care treatment.
  • After the initial treatment, paralytic ileus emerged instead of diarrhea, indicating advanced stages of the condition.
  • Tocilizumab was administered and led to rapid normalization of serum AA levels and improvement in symptoms, ultimately resulting in a biopsy showing no amyloid deposition after three treatments.

Synaptic zinc is an activity-related neuromodulator, enriched in hippocampal mossy fibers and a subset of glutamatergic cortical projections, exclusive of thalamocortical or corticothalamic. Some degree of pathway specificity in the utilization of synaptic zinc has been reported in rodents. Here, we use focal injections of the retrograde tracer sodium selenite to identify zinc-positive (Zn+) projection neurons in the monkey ventral visual pathway.

A 50-year-old woman was emergently admitted because of rapidly progressive unconsciousness, renal failure, hepatic dysfunction, hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia, and high-grade fever in July, 2008. Based on clinical and laboratory findings, we made a tentative diagnosis of thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) and immediately initiated the plasma exchange (PE). Despite the PE, she developed panperitonitis due to multiple intestinal perforation and massive splenic infarction within a week after the admission.

A 55-year-old woman was diagnosed with POEMS syndrome; however, we could not perform high-dose chemotherapy with autologous peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (auto-PBSCT) because of rapidly progressive congestive heart failure. Thus, we treated the patient with thalidomide plus dexamethasone, which brought about a marked improvement of systolic dysfunction, POEMS syndrome-related symptoms and the serum concentrations of vascular endothelial growth factor. Subsequently, we safely performed high-dose chemotherapy with auto-PBCST.
