FOLFIRINOX is a standard chemotherapeutic regimen for patients with advanced pancreatic cancer who have a good performance status. In this study, we present the case of a 64-year-old male who developed dysarthria following FOLFIRINOX treatment, and review all four cases of dysarthria encountered among the nine patients who received this treatment in our hospital. In all cases, dysarthria occurred during the infusion of irinotecan in the first course of treatment, persisted for several hours, and then resolved rapidly without any sequelae.

Rare and diagnostically challenging, paraneoplastic syndromes can appear months to years before detection of their underlying neoplasms and are associated with rapidly progressive neurologic deficits, including cochleovestibulopathy and death. Less than 20 cases of paraneoplastic cochleovestibulopathy have been reported in the online database PubMed. We present three recent cases: one patient with a history of B-cell follicular lymphoma who developed dermatomyositis and hearing loss before detection of lymphoma recurrence in his anterior chest wall, a second patient with sudden asymmetric hearing loss, found to have a 12-cm renal mass before death, and a third with fluctuating bilateral hearing loss who was ultimately found to have a thymoma.

Arctic Ocean microbial eukaryote phytoplankton form subsurface chlorophyll maximum (SCM), where much of the annual summer production occurs. This SCM is particularly persistent in the Western Arctic Ocean, which is strongly salinity stratified. The recent loss of multiyear sea ice and increased particulate-rich river discharge in the Arctic Ocean results in a greater volume of fresher water that may displace nutrient-rich saltier waters to deeper depths and decrease light penetration in areas affected by river discharge.

To lighten the workload of health care professionals, we conducted a clinical test of a newly developed automated infection screening system using a multivariable logistic regression model. The system was tested with 44 influenza patients and 45 healthy control subjects based on 3 vital signs: facial temperature, heart rate and respiratory rate. The system showed a high accuracy for distinguishing influenza patients from control subjects within 15 seconds.

The aim of this study is to identify a plasticizer that is effective in the suppression of the autohemolysis of the stored blood and can be used to replace di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) in blood containers. The results of hemolysis test using mannitol-adenine-phosphate/red cell concentrates (MAP/RCC) spiked with plasticizers included phthalate, phthalate-like, trimeliate, citrate, and adipate derivatives revealed that di-isononyl-cyclohexane-1,2-dicarboxylate (Hexamoll(®) DINCH), di(2-ethylhexyl)-1,2,3,6-tetrahydro-phthalate (DOTP), and diisodecyl phthalate (DIDP) exhibited a hemolysis suppression effect almost equal to that of DEHP, but not other plasticizers. This finding suggested that the presence of 2 carboxy-ester groups at the ortho position on a 6-membered ring of carbon atoms may be required to exhibit such an effect.

In aortic vascular surgery, a navigation system must represent the anatomical map of individual patient in order to detect the important artery. To provide a proper fit for positions along the dorsoventral axis, the spinous process was added to a currently used anatomical point set consisting of four anterior body landmarks. We have synthesized several stilbene analogues and have reported that the hydroxyl group in the 4' position of RSV exhibited strong radical scavenging action. Alginate is a polysaccharide that can be crosslinked by divalent cations, such as calcium ions, to form a gel. Chemical modification is typically used to improve its cell adhesive properties for tissue engineering applications.
