The endosymbiotic theory postulates that many genes migrated from endosymbionts to the nuclear genomes of their hosts. Some migrated genes lack presequences directing proteins to mitochondria, and their mitochondrial targeting signals appear to be inscribed in the core coding regions as internal targeting signals (ITSs). ITSs may have evolved after sequence transfer to nuclei or ITSs may have pre-existed before sequence transfer.

Conditioned taste aversion (CTA) can be classically conditioned in the pond snail Lymnaea stagnalis and subsequently be consolidated into long-term memory (LTM). The neural trace that subserves CTA-LTM can be summarized as follows: A polysynaptic inhibitory postsynaptic potential recorded in the neuron 1 medial (N1M) cell in the conditioned snails as a result of activation of the cerebral giant cell (CGC) is larger and lasts longer than that in control snails. The N1M cell is ultimately activated by the CGC via the neuron 3 tonic (N3t) cell.

[Clinicopathological characteristics of ten cases of advanced gastric carcinoma after S-1 combined with cisplatin administered as neoadjuvant chemotherapy].

Objective: Although neoadjuvant chemotherapy(NAC)has been recognized as an important option for improving the clinical outcome of patients with advanced gastric carcinoma, convincing evidence that it prolongs life and brings about a good prognosis are both lacking. We retrospectively evaluated the efficacy and safety of NAC in ten patients with advanced gastric cancer.

Methods: A total of ten patients with advanced gastric cancer, who received NAC with the combination of S-1 and cisplatin in our hospital from April 2008 to March 2010, were retrospectively investigated.

In a previous study, we revealed that a commercially available product of dietary supplement containing a chicken comb extract (CCE), which is rich in hyaluronan, not only relieves joint pain and other symptoms, but also potentially improves the balance of type II collagen degradation/synthesis in patients with knee osteoarthritis. Since soccer is one of the sports most likely to cause knee osteoarthritis (OA), we evaluated the effect of a CCE-containing supplement on cartilage and bone metabolism in athletes. Fourteen and 15 subjects (all midfielders) were randomly assigned to receive the test product (test group) and the dummy placebo containing only vehicle (placebo group), respectively, for 12 weeks.

Although a majority of plant Rf genes are thought to encode a family of RNA-binding proteins called pentatrico-peptide repeat (PPR) proteins, we isolated a novel type of Rf from sugar beet.

Twins with neonatal pemphigus vulgaris born to a mother with pemphigus vulgaris: a case report.

Dichorionic diamniotic twins were born at 37 weeks of gestation by cesarean section to a 34-year-old primigravid Japanese woman because the first twin was in breech presentation. The mother had been diagnosed with pemphigus vulgaris prior to her pregnancy. In addition to a high antidesmoglein 3 autoantibody titer, flaccid bullae and erosions on both of the twins' lips and in their oral cavities at 13 days of age led to the diagnosis of neonatal pemphigus vulgaris.

Hypomanic episode during recurrent gastric cancer treatment: report of a rare case and literature review.

Rapid sphere-to-prism (STP) transformation of silver was studied in aqueous AgNO(3)/NaBH(4)/polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)/trisodium citrate (Na(3)CA)/H(2)O(2) solutions by monitoring time-dependent surface plasmon resonance (SPR) bands in the UV-vis region, by examining transmission electron microscopic (TEM) images, and by analyzing emitted gases during fast reaction. Roles of PVP, Na(3)CA, and H(2)O(2) were studied without addition of a reagent, with different timing of each reagent's addition, and with addition of H(2)O(2) to mixtures of spheres and prisms. Results show that prisms can be prepared without addition of PVP, although it is useful to synthesize smaller monodispersed prisms.

Radical endoscopic resection is unsuitable for most synchronous, multiple and early gastric cancers.

Background/aims: It remains unclear whether synchronous, multiple, early gastric cancers can be radically resected with endoscopic resection.

Methodology: Patients who underwent gastrectomy for early gastric cancer were included in this study and divided into two groups: a solitary gastric cancer group and a multiple gastric cancer group. The clinicopathological features of patients in each group were compared and the criteria for endoscopic resection were subsequently investigated.

Improved intratumoral delivery of PEG-coated siRNA-lipoplexes by combination with metronomic S-1 dosing in a murine solid tumor model.

Efficient systemic siRNA delivery to cells in the target tissue is a current critical challenge in the drug delivery field. Several studies have demonstrated that nanoparticles such as polyethylene glycol (PEG)-coated siRNA-lipoplexes may enhance the systemic delivery of siRNA to tumor. However, the disordered tumor microenvironment still poses a potential impediment with respect to the efficient delivery of PEG-coated siRNA-lipoplexes.

Psychological and physiological responses to odor-evoked autobiographic memory.

Objective: The "Proust phenomenon" occurs when a certain smell evokes a specific memory. Recent studies have demonstrated that odor-evoked autobiographic memories are more emotional than those elicited by other sensory stimuli because of the direct neural communication between the olfactory system and the amygdala. The amygdala is known to regulate various physiological activities including the endocrine and immune systems; therefore, odor-evoked autobiographic memory may trigger various psychological and physiological responses; however, the responses elicited by this memory remains obscure.

7α-Hydroxypregnenolone, a new key regulator of amphibian locomotion: discovery, progress and prospect.

Seasonally-breeding amphibians have served as excellent animal models to investigate the biosynthesis and biological actions of neurosteroids. Previous studies have demonstrated that the brain of amphibians possesses key steroidogenic enzymes and produces pregnenolone, a precursor of steroid hormones, and other various neurosteroids. We recently found that the brain of seasonally-breeding newts actively produces 7α-hydroxypregnenolone, a previously undescribed amphibian neurosteroid.

Anti-angiogenic therapy via cationic liposome-mediated systemic siRNA delivery.

siRNA has been touted as a therapeutic molecule against genetic diseases, which include cancers. But several challenging issues remain in order to achieve efficient systemic siRNA delivery and a sufficient therapeutic effect for siRNA in vivo. Cationic liposome shows promise as a carrier for nucleic acids, as it can selectively bind to angiogenic tumor blood vessels.

Gene expression profiling of neural stem cells and identification of regulators of neural differentiation during cortical development.

During mammalian brain development, neural stem cells transform from neuroepithelial cells to radial glial cells and finally remain as astrocyte-like cells in the postnatal and adult brain. Neuroepithelial cells divide symmetrically and expand the neural stem cell pool; after the onset of neurogenesis, radial glial cells sequentially produce deep layer neurons and then superficial layer neurons by asymmetric, self-renewing divisions during cortical development. Thereafter, gliogenesis supersedes neurogenesis, while a subset of neural stem cells retain their stemness and lurk in the postnatal and adult brain.
