IQGAP1 selectively interacts with K-Ras but not with H-Ras and modulates K-Ras function.

K-Ras is frequently mutated and activated especially in pancreatic cancers. To analyze K-Ras function, we have searched for K-Ras interacting proteins and found IQ motif containing GTPase activating protein 1 (IQGAP1) as a novel K-Ras binding protein. IQGAP1 has been known as a scaffold protein for B-Raf, MEK1/2 and ERK1/2.

Acute necrotizing colitis due to sigmoid colon cancer.

When obstructive colitis becomes fulminant, it is known as 'acute necrotizing colitis'. We report a rare case of acute necrotizing colitis due to sigmoid colon cancer, in which shock status occurred within ten hours of onset. A 79-year-old female with acute abdominal pain was transported to our hospital with acute shock.

Analysis of genes causing hypertension and stroke in spontaneously hypertensive rats: gene expression profiles in the brain.

Spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and stroke-prone SHR (SHRSP) are frequently used as rat models not only of essential hypertension and stroke, but also of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Normotensive Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKY) are used as the control rats in these cases. An increasing number of studies has demonstrated the critical role of the central nervous system in the development and maintenance of hypertension.

[A case of coexisting borderline phyllodes tumor and non-invasive ductal carcinoma].

A 36-year-old woman with benign phyllodes tumor of the left breast had undergone lumpectomy 1 year ago and was admitted to our hospital because of a left breast mass on the operation scar. Ultrasonography showed a 35 mm low-echoic, elliptical mass with a high depth to width( D/W) ratio in the C area and a 10 mm low-echoic, polygonal mass with a high D/W ratio in the E area. Histological examination of an ultrasonography-guided vacuum-assisted biopsy specimen indicated recurrent phyllodes tumor.

[The efficacy of early diagnosis of brain metastasis and systemic treatment after radiotherapy in patients with metastatic breast cancer].

We treated 9 patients diagnosed with brain metastasis from breast cancer. Although 1 patient was initially diagnosed as having Stage IV disease, 5 had Stage I/II early breast cancer. All patients had defined brain metastasis after chemotherapy.

This paper presents a study of the performance of the muon reconstruction in the analysis of proton-proton collisions at [Formula: see text] TeV at the LHC, recorded by the ATLAS detector in 2010. This performance is described in terms of reconstruction and isolation efficiencies and momentum resolutions for different classes of reconstructed muons. The results are obtained from an analysis of [Formula: see text] meson and [Formula: see text] boson decays to dimuons, reconstructed from a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 40 pb[Formula: see text].

Light-quark and gluon jet discrimination in [Formula: see text] collisions at [Formula: see text] with the ATLAS detector.

A likelihood-based discriminant for the identification of quark- and gluon-initiated jets is built and validated using 4.7 fb[Formula: see text] of proton-proton collision data at [Formula: see text] [Formula: see text] collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Data samples with enriched quark or gluon content are used in the construction and validation of templates of jet properties that are the input to the likelihood-based discriminant.

Search for direct top squark pair production in events with a [Formula: see text] boson, [Formula: see text]-jets and missing transverse momentum in [Formula: see text] TeV [Formula: see text] collisions with the ATLAS detector.

A search is presented for direct top squark pair production using events with at least two leptons including a same-flavour opposite-sign pair with invariant mass consistent with the [Formula: see text] boson mass, jets tagged as originating from [Formula: see text]-quarks and missing transverse momentum. The analysis is performed with proton-proton collision data at [Formula: see text] collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC in 2012 corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb[Formula: see text].

Dietary fat has multiple roles on human health, and some dietary fat is used to treat organic diseases because of its anti-inflammatory effect. Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is fairly common, with prevalence estimates ranging from 1 to 2%. OCD is generally described as having a chronic course with periods of waxing and waning of symptoms, and most individuals with OCD are at risk for other comorbid psychiatric disorders such as major depression. It is associated with considerable impairment and disability, in that individuals with OCD often experience severe social and interpersonal difficulties, familial dysfunction, occupational problems and impaired quality of life.

Measurements of the variation of inclusive jet suppression as a function of relative azimuthal angle, Δφ, with respect to the elliptic event plane provide insight into the path-length dependence of jet quenching. ATLAS has measured the Δφ dependence of jet yields in 0.14 nb(-1) of √(s(NN))=2.

Non-biased and efficient global amplification of a single-cell cDNA library.

Analysis of single-cell gene expression promises a more precise understanding of molecular mechanisms of a living system. Most techniques only allow studies of the expressions for limited numbers of gene species. When amplification of cDNA was carried out for analysing more genes, amplification biases were frequently reported.

Monodisperse, molecularly imprinted polymers for creatinine by modified precipitation polymerization and their applications to creatinine assays for human serum and urine.

Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) for creatinine were prepared by modified precipitation polymerization using methacrylic acid as a functional monomer and divinylbenzene as a crosslinker. The prepared MIPs were monodispersed with a narrow particle size distribution. Binding experiments and Scatchard analyses revealed that two classes of binding sites, high- and low-affinity sites, were formed on the MIPs.

Applications of cryopreserved unfertilized mouse oocytes for in vitro fertilization.

Since the first successful reports into oocyte freezing, many papers concerning the cryopreservation of mouse oocytes have been published. However, a simple and practical cryopreservation method for unfertilized C57BL/6 mouse oocytes, and an IVF system using these cryopreserved oocytes have yet to be established, in spite of the fact that C57BL/6 is the prevalent inbred strain and is used for large-scale knockout programs. In this study, unfertilized C57BL/6 mouse oocytes were cryopreserved via a simple vitrification method.

This study revealed important information about the relationship between the performance of MIPs and experimental factors such as the components of MIP synthesis and a reaction solvent. Herein, we also describe the problems associated with the preparation of a "non-imprinted polymer," which is often used to evaluate the effect of a template molecule, and we propose a new type of reference polymer, "blank polymer.

Retinal cell type-specific prevention of ischemia-induced damages by LPS-TLR4 signaling through microglia.

Reprogramming of toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) by brief ischemia or lipopolysacharide (LPS) contributes to superintending tolerance against destructive ischemia in brain. However, beneficial roles of TLR4 signaling in ischemic retina are not well known. This study demonstrated that preconditioning with LPS 48 h prior to the retinal ischemia prevents the cellular damage in morphology with hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining and functions of retina with electroretinogram (ERG), while post-ischemia treatment deteriorated it.
