Aims: To clarify longitudinal change of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and various types of urinary incontinence following robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) using validated questionnaires.

Materials And Methods: The core lower urinary tract symptom score (CLSS) and the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire (ICIQ)-Short Form (SF) questionnaires were administered to 607 consecutive, treatment-naïve men receiving RARP before and after surgery. The time course of comprehensive LUTS and various types of urinary incontinence, including stress-, urgency-, and urinary incontinence with no obvious reason, were evaluated.

We developed a detergent-free enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for HIV-1 viral protein R (Vpr), an accessory protein of human immunodeficiency virus type-1 (HIV), and detected soluble Vpr in ∼22% of HIV patients who were receiving combination antiretroviral therapy and were free of plasma HIV RNA. Notably, the levels of CD8-positive cell count, soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (sICAM-1), and C-C motif chemokine ligand 2 (CCL2), all of which are markers of chronic inflammation in HIV patients, were higher in Vpr-positive patients than in Vpr-negative patients. Because sICAM1 and CCL2 are associated with an increased risk of HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder, we propose that an established Vpr-ELISA would be useful for monitoring the risk of HIV complications during latent HIV infection.

Background: Sarcopenic obesity is a health condition involving a combination of excess adipose tissue and loss of muscle mass. Although sarcopenic obesity is known to contribute to the morbidity and mortality of chronic diseases, limited data are available in patients with cardiovascular disease. The present study was performed to examine whether sarcopenic obesity determined by preoperative computed tomography (CT) is a useful predictor of postoperative mortality in patients undergoing cardiovascular surgery.

Aim: The purpose of this study was to compare two homogeneous assays of low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) with a modified beta quantification reference measurement for LDL-C (BQ-LDL), fractions of chylomicron (CM), very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) and intermediate-density lipoprotein (IDL) by quantitative ultracentrifugation in patients with hypertriglyceridemia.

Methods: Two homogeneous LDL-C assays (LDL-C(K), Kyowa Medex and LDL-C(S), Sekisui Medical) were used to measure 198 samples of fresh anonymized leftover sera with hypertriglyceridemia (≥ 150 mg/dL). Of these, 32 samples with discrepant LDL-C levels or hypertriglyceridemia (≥ 400 mg/dL) were used for further analysis.

Background: The detection of impaired physical performance in older adults with cardiovascular disease is essential for clinical management and therapeutic decision-making. There is a requirement for an assessment tool that can be used conveniently, rapidly, and securely in clinical practice for screening decreased physical performance.

Objective: The present study was performed to evaluate the association of office-based physical assessments with decreased physical performance and to compare the prognostic capability of these assessments in older adults with cardiovascular disease.

Background/objective: Few studies have addressed the type of time course regression that can predict changes in functional ability in inpatients with schizophrenia. This study investigated the possibility of predicting changes in functional ability by logarithmic and linear regression modelling when treating schizophrenia.

Methods: This longitudinal study included two analysis rounds.

Article Synopsis
  • Cardiomyopathy occurs in 21% of children with mitochondrial disease and is linked to poorer survival rates compared to those without it.
  • After 35 months of follow-up, the ten-year survival rates were significantly lower for cardiomyopathy patients (18%) versus non-cardiomyopathy patients (67%).
  • Genetic analysis of cardiomyopathy in these cases could enhance understanding and potentially improve prognosis through better patient phenotyping.

Article Synopsis
  • * Electron microscopy showed unusual electron-dense deposits in the glomerular basement membrane, with features similar to membranous nephropathy but lacking typical immunoglobulins and complements.
  • * Genetic analysis identified a homozygous ApoE2/2 variant and a new mutation (ApoE Toyonaka), suggesting these factors contribute to glomerulopathy and the unique electron-dense findings.

There is a lack of data on how to treat hypertensive patients with diabetes when treatment with medium doses of calcium channel blocker and angiotensin II type 1 receptor blocker (ARB) is insufficient to achieve the target blood pressure (BP). A total of 121 participants with type 2 diabetes and uncontrolled essential hypertension, who were receiving medium doses of amlodipine (5 mg/day) and ARB, were enrolled. Participants were randomized to receive either a high dose of amlodipine (10 mg/day) plus a medium dose of ARB (high-AML) or a medium dose of amlodipine (5 mg/day) plus a high dose of ARB (high-ARB).

Aims: The efficacy of perioperative pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT) for continence recovery after robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) remains unclear. Visualization of the bladder neck and urethra using transperineal ultrasound (US) may promote self-recognition of urethral closure during PFM contraction. This study aimed to examine whether transperineal US-guided PFMT promotes early recovery of post-RARP incontinence.

Background/aims: Several clinical practice guidelines recommend regular assessment of physical activity and physical function as part of routine care in hemodialysis patients. However, there is no clear evidence to support these recommendations. We investigated whether the proportion of attendance at a regular program for management of physical activity and physical function can predict all-cause mortality and cardiovascular events in hemodialysis patients.

Background: Heart failure is the end stage of heart disease, and the prevalence and incidence of the condition is rapidly increasing. Although heart transplantation is one type of surgical treatment for people with end-stage heart failure, donor availability is limited. Implantable ventricular assist devices (VADs) therefore offer an alternative treatment to heart transplantation.

Background: Both the lateral center-edge angle and acetabular roof obliquity on anteroposterior radiographs are well-known prognostic predictors of osteoarthritis progression in patients with acetabular dysplasia. However, few studies have evaluated osteoarthritis progression on false-profile radiographs. In the present study, osteoarthritis progression was evaluated on anteroposterior and false-profile radiographs.

We report the preparation of new C- and C-symmetrical molecules constructed on a triazine (TAZ) template. Anti-herpes simplex virus type 1 (anti-HSV-1) and cytotoxic activities against Vero cells of synthesized TAZ derivatives were evaluated. The results suggested that the presence of an electron-donating group(s) on the benzene ring in benzylamine groups on the TAZ template is an important structural factor for expressing a high level of anti-HSV-1 activity and low cytotoxicity for these C types of TAZ derivatives.
